We arrived at 8.30am after an overnight train trip and were pleasantly surprised to be able to check in, move into our room, and use the showers immediately. The owners were very friendly and helpful, providing a city map and showing us the location of supermarkets, laundromat, the best route to the medieval city, etc. They admitted we had been double booked, but had realised this before our arrival and had set up a downstairs room which is not usually used for guests, for us. The room was huge and the beds were clean (we got 2 singles instead of a double, but this happened to us frequently throughout Europe. One of the singles was a King single). The corners of the room were a bit dusty and their daughters' slippers were still under the chair! but this didn't bother us. It must have been well into the 30s (celsius) while we were there but the room was blissfully cool in the middle of the day, despite no air conditioning. Pretty basic rooms but in a great location, a couple of minutes walk from the station in the main town. There are plenty of bars and restaurants within a few minutes walk and the old Cite is easy enough to get to, probably about 15 minutes walk across the old bridge and up the hill. The old Cite seems to be where most of the nightlife action is. The restaurants there are mostly excellent with a lot of regional food and wine. The historical tours are definitely worth doing and there seem to be a lot of events scheduled during the tourist season.

I seemed to cope reasonably well with my broken French, as many of the bars and restaurants have English speakers. The tourist information centre is pretty good too and organises guided tours in English.

The weather was extremely hot when we were there, in the high 30s every day and no rain at all. The lack of air-con in the hotel rooms was the only thing to make the stay less comfortable. We tended to stay indoors during the...
