Our Bed & Breakfast L'Orangerie is housed in a magnificently restored "maison de maitre' from the 18th century in which many original features have been preserved. Our 5 spacious guest rooms retain the atmosphere from the past but possess modern day comforts. In our beautiful garden you can enjoy several terraces as well as our lovely heated pool and Jacuzzi and there is plenty of space to quietly relax. You can park your car in our private (closed off) yard. Our Orangerie is a spacious and stunning space that is intended for the use of our guests and also the eye-catcher of the house. During spring and autumn breakfast and 'table d'hotes' will be served in the Orangerie but, in summer, meals will be served outside. We are located in the quiet village of Monlegun, an excellent base from which to visit the numerous sights and attractions in the direct vicinity. The medieval "Cite de Carcassonne" which is listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, is located 2.5 Kilometres away. We are in Cathar Country and at the centre of 5 different wine regions. pros: 1. beautiful pool and yard. the house is nice. 2. the bathrooms and beds were comfortable and rooms well done. cons: 1. this hotel says some rooms have a/c. i think only one room has it not the lobby or other rooms. it is misleading to not be very clear about it. we would not have stayed here for the price without a/c. the house gets incredibly hot. No screens, loud motorcycles outside (it's in a weird location) plus squeky floors made sleep tough. Not comfortable for summer until after 11. 2. it is located in a weird spot. there is no where to walk within 30 minutes despite some of the reviews saying that you can- 3. the wifi is not good. we asked before coming if it was good and they reiterated it was good. I needed it for my work. we raised with the owner and he said it 'worked fine for him'. he was downstairs maybe that was where the modem was. quite dismissive. 4. they dont seem to want to host kids. we had two kids under 5. they should say adult only. Maybe we missed that rule. 5. our greeting was bad despite other reviews. it was inhospitable and unkind. dont make them annoyed. we clearly caught them at a bad time despite telling them we would be a little early. We were 70 minutes early. It was 104 degrees with two kids and sent packing and told to 'go to a nearby park or something'. not use the restroom or enjoy lobby, check bad wifi. So we found some shade then hung in the car... once checking in it was repeatedly mentioned to us that we were early .... by 70 minutes. we didnt expect to go to our rooms but we certainly didnt expect to be almost lectured or met with annoyance or what seemed like anger. once checking in we relaxed for a bit, tried to get on the bad internet, and then went to the pool. Going back to not for kids our 4 y/o kid was told to not sit on a chair that to us looked like outdoor furuniture because the host said it was to be used for dining the next day - it would dry in this 104 degree heat with breakfast probably 15 hours from when my barely wet daughter sat on it - - again - clearly not meant for kids or to get comfortable or not too comfortable. I don’t think the comment would have been made to other guests. we saw another guest check in and they were given a fantastically different show. how well they were greated better than us - like a switch flipped and they turned the real or the fake on. i dont know. but again, i think we caught them at a bad time or they were really mad about the 70 minute early arrival. the other guests had a nice Mercedes and were adults...that well i saw a harsh post from hosts at a brit about brits so maybe similar for americans? maybe they just didnt like us. that being said, nice to be nice it's a b&B... - it was 104 degrees and we just drove hours to get here thinking it would be a peaceful sanctuary after a long flight and commute. it was turned out hot and unwelcome. 6. when he showed us the family room he mentioned annoyed that we booked for 3 adults not 2 adults 2 toddlers. on the website you cant select kids. surely not to save money but because their wesbite didnt work. a 2 year old doesnt even count in most places. We apologized but were confused. In conclusion. they shouldnt say there is wifi. they should be very clear there is no a/c and it's very hot, and should state kids arent really desired here. for this price to sweat all night - woof. we messed up. great pics on the internet though and clearly some people had a good welcome and nice time with these hosts. i think before covid. 7. we left early. despite email weeks earlier saying we could with a cancellation fee he charged us full amount and showed the email he sent the day before buried in the bill that said no refunds. sneaky. we stayed at about ten places this month in france, this was most expensive and worst. We made friendships with most hosts and left good reviews. not here sadly. hope he enjoys the money he made off a young family but didnt earn. really a damper here.

Response from Erik Blaauboer, Eigenaar at Bed & Breakfast L'Orangerie
Responded 21 Aug 2022
Although you might think not…, we are really happy with your review. After 9 years of business and positive reviews all over, a review like this tells more about the guests than about us or our place. It doesn’t deserve to much comment, but just a few words is fine. There is no such thing as “hidden terms & conditions”. Everything is in the confirmation. If you know there is only one room with airco, probably it’s better to book this one. If you know you are with 2 little kids, why book for 3 adults..?? Don’t the children count as normal persons? I know why... booking direct for 3 persons is cheaper than for 4 persons. And I guess it's not up to the guests to decide who ( and of which age ) can stay for free. If you confirm, after our email conversation, to arrive at 3 PM because we explicitly asked you not to arrive before…why show up at 13.50 hours whereas you already knew we wouldn’t be ready. And yes, from Arles it's a gigantic 2 hours drive... So turning up 70 minutes early wasn't by accident. It's just a lack of respect and not even respecting your own emails. Breakfast starts at 08.30 , correct ! This is clear upfront, whether your kids get up at 6, 5, or 4 am. And you can always, whenever you want, have a coffee in our Orangerie or in your room. Internet is fine, many people work from here through internet. I am on the same network, no problems. We are really happy with all our satisfied guests, with or without children. We are happy with all our returning guests. Reviews like this only help us. And yes, we don’t care about the money. But we do care about respect. Even in your above comment are to many things which are simply not true. And yes, we do B&B because we like to be hosts to friendly, open and truthful people. I am sorry…, but with you this just wasn’t the case. What had a bad start didn’t have a happy ending. And I don’t even feel sorry.

The house is beautiful and clean. The rooms are tastefully decorated. The bathroom is great. However, I was a bit disappointed when it came to the hospitality aspect of our stay.( I only write this review after we finished our one month trip in France and were able to compare the hospitality we received everywhere else. ) We arrived at L'orangerie during a crazy heat wave. It was 107 degrees F. We ended up arriving 1 hour prior to official check-in time. And I know, we were early, but we had a 2 and a 4 year old and we took a toll road that was quicker than the original road we were going to take. When we arrived, rather than be told we could stay in any downstairs common area or even outside until our room was ready, we were just told to come back in an hour. It was the rules that check-in was at a certain time. So we tried to go for a walk then ended up waiting in our car because it had AC. To me this wasn't enough to damper my stay, I just figured they were rigid with rules. That night it was 96 degrees F in our room and my poor 2 year old couldn't handle it. So the next day I told them we had to leave to find somewhere with AC. They said they understood but would have to charge us the full price for all of the three nights. They said that that was "the rules". I do understand and I know it is their business and they need to make their livelihood, but the whole interaction was very cold. Just a warning for anyone else who may need flexibility and/ or accommodation...that you may not get it here.

Bonjour, after your husband Brendan Sullivan, you are of course very welcome to leave your review. Like I said before, it will not affect us, it will just make things clear. If there are 1, 2 or 3 bad reviews out of hundreds... it probably tells more about the writer of it then it does about us. No further comments from my side. It's ALL about respect... As from second one we knew this wouldn't be a happy marriage. If people can't even respect their own promises... We are definitely not rigid with rules, but very sensitive to respect. It needs 2 to tango !

My husband and I stayed for 5 days at L'Orangerie at the end of June 2022. Erik and Jeanette are amazing hosts and they made us feel welcome from the start. They were full of great recommendations and Erik called ahead and got us reservations at a few restaurants. People in the community clearly love them as well, as we were greeted warmly when reservations were made by them. The house is beautiful. The breakfast and coffee are served with a smile and were delicious. They have a great little honor bar that's stocked with wine and beer to enjoy by the pool. Or, when the weather is foul, in the hot tub. :) We were able to walk down to the city (it's like a 25 min walk, if I recall correctly) and it's a great launching spot for day trips to loads of interesting sites in the area -- old city of Lagrasse; day trip to Collioure and drive down the coast into Spain, and loads of great wineries to explore. Highly recommend!

B&B L'Orangerie is a fantastic place to stay. Jeanette and Eric are wonderfull hosts who do everything to make your stay as perfect as possible. The rooms are very spacious with comfortable beds.. Breakfast was lovely; Some evenings Jeanette cooks for heir guests. This was very tasty and gives you the opportunity to meat the other guests. Its also convenient because then we hadden't go out for eating in a restaurant every evening. The garden with al lot of shadow and the pool are the perfect place to hang out in the afternoon after visiting Carcassonne and his surroundings. Higly recommend!

We’ve just returned from a wonderful stay at L’Orangerie. Jeanette and Erik are amazing hosts who go the extra mile to make sure you have a perfect stay. The accommodation is beautifully appointed in a peaceful location. The garden, pool and hot tub are a perfect place to relax after a day out and the honesty bar is a really nice touch and extremely good value. Breakfast is freshly prepared each morning and is delicious. We hope to return one day and would highly recommend.

A wonderful home from home b&b with hosts Jeanette and Erik. Nothing was too much trouble for them and you felt like you were visiting friends. We had a great room, very comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom. Breakfast was fantastic, fruit, eggs, meats, yoghurts and a selection of delicious breads which were fetched by Erik each morning from the local bakery. Lots of comfortable outside area’s to relax in and a heated pool and hot tub too. We loved the walk into the old city which was around 25 minutes but easy to get a taxi if not. We will definitely be back as a great base to see other parts of France. A fabulous break. Thank you.

We were blown away by how characterful and beautiful this B&B is. The breakfasts were so nice, with a variety of eggs, fruit, pastries and fresh bread. The rooms were spacious, with amazing high ceilings. And the pool was the perfect place to hang out in the afternoon. Thank you Erik and Jeannette for an amazing stay, and for the wonderful meal you cooked one evening. We would definitely return to your B&B if we visited Carcassone again!

This was our third stay at L’Orangerie and we have already planned our fourth visit. Jeannette and Erik are just brilliant hosts and nothing is ever too much trouble. The rooms are gorgeous, the beds are super comfy and the breakfast is delicious. We love that we can walk to La Cité every day and then come back and relax by the pool and help ourselves to drinks from the honesty bar. Our favourite place.

Our 6th time here and it’s as brilliant as ever. Guess we’ll be back in 2020! Charm, sophistication, down to earth, very friendly, fabulous rooms, the very best hosts in Jeanette and Erik. Just 5 rooms, feels like a luxurious home from home. As you can tell, we love it 💗
