We stayed in the hotel for four nights. The abbey is really magnificent! But...the hotel is not. The girl at the reception was very friendly but could not make up for the rest of the hotel. The size of the superior room (Grande Tradition nr 205) was good but it was completely worn out. The shower was dangerously hot or... more

Having stayed at this hotel on three other occasions over the past decade and loved it, I was very disappointed to see that it has been let fall into such a shabby state. The rooms, that were always small, used to be charming and well maintained but now they resemble a hostel with dirty carpets and broken furniture and bathroom... more

I give this hotel a mixed review. Entering the hotel was a strange experience. You pull your car up to a side entrance and call the front desk via the intercom. They confirm your reservation and buzz you in. You then need a code to get in and out of the compound, either by foot or by car. The employees... more

This was a fantastic place to stay -- provided you did not come to spend lots of time in your room (which we did not!). Getting to stay on the grounds was a very special experience, especially in the low season. We had the grounds mostly to ourselves when they were closed to the public. The staff was extremely friendly... more

The room and double bed (maybe less?) were incredibly small. (the 55-60 Euro rooms) The abbey was great. The grounds were super. It was very quiet at night. The staff was OK except the sommelier in the restaurant who was a snot (female). The dinner was: mozzarella and tomato (no better than my work canteen) a slice of dorade fish:... more

This hotel was not accurately represented on the web site. The basic premise of staying on the historic property sounded great but the reality was very disappointing. The public spaces are horrible. There really isn't a reception desk or a lobby of any kind. You are instructed to a separate building, where you encounter a soda machine and an elevator.... more

When some plans to stay with acquaintances fell through I persuaded my traveling companion that we should go to Abbaye de Fontevraud. Now this place is outside of Saumur and not too easy to find but I had stayed there three or four years previously and had a wonderful experience. Let me say straight away that neither of us had... more

This was the highlight of our trip staying in a 10th Century Abbey with modern very nice rooms. Henry II,his wife Eleanor of Aquaitaine and their son Richard the Lionheart are buried here. The Abbey is beautiful, the grounds wonderful and the small town is delightful. It's a walk in the past to tour this beautiful ediface. The restaurant is... more

This hotel in the midst of the ancient and well preserved Abbaye sounded too intriguing to pass up. The hotel is in the old Prierie St Lazare which is somewhat separated from the other abbaye buildings as it housed the lepers. They had their own chapel and cloisters (now the restaurant) which made it self sufficient for the nuns. We... more

Good value for money -- obviously on the British Classic Car Clubs' routes; [chapter of the AH3000 owners club during our visit] so repeat [British] business happens. We had a wonderful room overlooking the back of the [huge] abbey complex. What was less good was the safety issue that the bath/shower had no hand rails [etc], and that the dinner... more
