I stayed here back in May 2000. Reading the reviews written since then (including those written in French, which I can understand) it seems that little has changed. The staff at Vieux Lyon Youth hostel were rude and patronising, one day they sung a song during breakfast about guests coming to breakfast after the (very early) 9am cut off point late and how annoying guests were when they got up late.
