This past November my husband and I traveled to Munich for a few days. Overall the city was depressing and dirty (off tourist season I suppose). Our accomodations mirrored the dismal feeling of the city in every way. To begin with, the requests I made seemed to fall on deaf ears (though looking back on it the owners didn't speak much English). Given that this was Europe I asked for a nonsmoking room and a double bed. Neither greeted us when we opened the door. There were cobwebs where the ceiling met the wall, holes in the sheets, cigarette burns on the floor and the putrid smell of old smoke. It reminded me of something from "National Lampoon's European Vacation". We would have protested, but their was never anyone at the front desk except for when we arrived (after waiting for 30 minutes) and when we left.
