I've stayed in Madrid several times before, and always in hostels. You would normally expect basic but clean rooms and decent service. The Hostal Puerta del Sol, however, is truly horrible: the rooms are grimy, the corridors smell and the whole place feels gloomy and depressing. For the money this has to be the best place to stay in Madrid. We paid some £32 a night for a room with a roof terrace and en suite. If you are looking for business class type service then look elsewhere and be prepared to empty your wallet for the privilege and again for the internet access you get... more
