We wanted to be near the Vatican, and this is about as close as you can get. But then it's a bit far to the rest of the sights in Rome. The hotel is gloomy and depressing, though spacious. We had just arrived after spending 4 days at the AVA Hotel in Athens, so we had been spoiled. The breakfast... more

Really close to the St Peter square was the best of the hotel. The rooms are not so nice but comfortable and clean, mine was roomy, big enough for a family of 4 (my son is 3 years old though). The breakfast was also good. I think is a good deal for the price. more

A lovely looking hotel, very close to the Vatican and a good walk into the centre of town. We were very impressed when we arrived at the Columbus's grand entrance and reception, but the staff are a bit flat and disinterested to be honest, we didn't find any great hospitality about the place. We had 2 rooms and both were... more

just back from a four night trip to lovely Rome...pity about the hotel though. I booked it for its historical interest, being a 15th century building so I wasn't expecting modern decor, however, I did expect more than I got or was led to believe I'd get. The room was dark, dreary, depressing and not somewhere I'd want to spend... more

I got a bargain offer on internet for this hotel, and it was such a treat!Front desk staff always greeting courtiously, and the halls and stairs are really sleek and keeping a very authentic style. The room I got was, I suppose, among the hotels cheaper rooms. But it's size was surprisingly big for one, with wellkept furniture and a... more

The hotel is located in a good area and is relatively comfortable. The staff however are rude, ill mannered and have no concept of treating their guests with respect. They did not offer to help with my luggage when I arrived, kept reminding me when I had to check out and lied to my parents when they called me at... more

Lovely unusual hotel. Clean, nice basic room. Nice breakfast. We walked everywhere. No need for buses/tubes! Wear comfortable shoes. We had our meals out in the local restaurants. Don't dress like tourists...this is a smart city! Sunday morning service in Vatican is on TV, relayed on a tannoy outside the bedroom window, or better still, come out of hotel, turn... more

We stayed at the Columbus Mar 7-10, 2009. The hotel is located 200 yards from St.Peter's Basilica. You can walk (25-30 mins) to the centre of Rome, e.g. Trevi Fountain, but may need to get a taxi back, as it can be tiring. A taxi would cost circa 15 Euros one way. An alternative is to buy a hop on/off... more

I am always amazed at people's expectations when I read some negative reviews. This is a lovely hotel in a 15th century cardinal's palace. We had nothing but friendly helpful service from the staff, ate an incredible dinner in the hotel restaurant, and although the rooms are somewhat dark and spartan (it was a priest's residence, remember, not Las Vegas),... more

There is no doubt that the location near the Vatican is wonderful. It is a good 30 minute walk though, from the restaurants area (Travestevere) and you need to cross the river for other main sites i.e. Colosseum, Trevi fountain etc. so make sure you have good walking shoes. As said in previous reviews, the hotel lets itself down which... more
