We've stayed at the Conchiglia D'Ora on a few occasions. It's a nice, 1950s looking hotel with a swimming pool and very close to the beach and Lido. It's not the most modern of places, but then again, if you want "modern", Palermo may not be the right place for you.
The Conchiglia is run by a family and they're friendly and helpful enough. Meals are quite good and if you want to hang around in the evenings you can probably get into a game of cards or draughts with older guests and locals. As I said, it's very 1950s.
