I don't know what the bizarre inverse relationship is between design hotels and service, but it seems the higher up the concept ladder one goes, the less interested the establishment is in delivering quality service. After long looking for an affordable design hotel in Zürich we ended up in Greulich hotel. It was a very good decision: nice rooms, nice design, friendly service, good bar.... I will take what some call sterile over anything retro or antique, as the later always translate into unsleepable beds, overly ornate heavy drapes, and ridiculously decorated bathrooms. My partner and I stayed in a junior suite for two nights for 360 CHF per night. These suites were bi-level with a small lounge area and desk at a higher level than the bed and bathroom.
