We booked the Thorbecke as part of a last minute trip to celebrate our wedding anniversary and hoped to revisit the places we saw as back-packing students 35 years ago. We had stayed at Hotel Damrak Inn. Had a bad experience. We got a private room 3 bed apartment and it was great. Roomy. TV was not great but we didn't care. Had a stove, refrigerator and a microwave. I'm sitting here at 2:50 am and still cant to sleep due to the noisy music from (empty) night club downstairs. The Indonesian guy on reception with poor english says nothing can be done, I have to leave for an early flight and am considering napping at Schipol instead. I recently spent 3 days surrounding Queensday in Amsterdam and had an Okay experience at the Thorbecke. The other negative reviews are not all wrong but perhaps a little over zealous in their criticism. After reading the other reviews I must admit I was a bit sceptical but upon arrival at the hotel I was pleasantly surprised. The room was generally clean, nothing fantastic but basic and reasonably comfortable. It is in an excellent location but one draw back in a busy bar underneath.
