Having read the only review (to date) I was nearly put off staying at The Esquire. My advice? Don't be. Give it a chance!
The hotel is in a very smart smart area and above all VERY QUIET; being situated on a side street, just a few metres from the number 17 tram route. The rooms (my sister who lives there had booked two) were very clean, odour-free and well equipped including a flat screen TV, clock radio and very reasonably priced mini-bar. The staff were very friendly and the self-service breakfast a big hit with my two young daughters. OK! It's not The Ritz. Indeed, compared with a similar UK hotel (which would be 2 Star Hotel or 3 star B&B) it was a tad expensive. However, for me, being well located and having a decent night's sleep, it was worth every Euro.

I booked the Execuitive room, well there was nothing executive about it. The room was dirty and dusty with furniture from the 1960's There was a kitchen in the room. Maybe that would explain the sour smell in the room. If you used the kitchen (well lets call it a cuppboard with a microwave) there was a surchare of 25 euro. This is probably more then the ugly thing was worth. When you arrive you must pay in advance ?!? They are probably afraid that when you smell the room you will run away to find something better for the price of a whopping 125 euro (ca 200 usd) a night (in low season).

If you do plan to stay at this hotel take your own vacuum cleaner and your own sheets and blankets with you. And maybe some airspray.

But please try another hotel in my experience there are many great hotels in scheveningen!
