Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

An excellent hotel in a great location. The family room we stayed in was lovely, very clean with a view of the courtyard. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was good too, so overall highly recommended.

Average hotel below par service. Reception is a hatch in the wall, and reception staff came across not really helpful or service driven. It's not welcoming at all. The room seems dirty and uncomfortable. Hotel bar, you had to keep picking up a phone, and someone came to serve you. Felt a bit fawlty towers wouldn't return or recommend to friends.

Felt almost surreal staying in a Monastry. It is beautiful inside & out. Our room was in the original building with all the features such as beams etc. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast buffet had a good selection with some hot items too. Ghent itself is an amazing city.

The building is lovely, and much larger than we expected. We opted for a larger room which had two extra beds on a mezzanine level, though you'd need to be fit and competent to use the stairs. The bathroom was lovely and the bath was really big. Staff were very helpful. Yes, the corridors echo, though on the third floor the room was really, really quiet.

We stayed in a recently renovated room with on-suite bathroom. (Some rooms for singles share a bathroom) Room was very comfortable. The property has a large room for complimentary breakfast, with menu items as good as the cruise ship we were on last week, except not cooked to order. Complimentary espresso machine available for use all day, with a beautiful private outdoor courtyard adjacent for quite comtemplation. Hotel was very convenient for short walk to the popular tourist areas, e.g. canal boat rides, churches, museums, etc. Breakfast room also gets used occasionally for business/social functions in the evening, but noise/traffic was never an issue during our two day stay. Would stay again.

I booked a small room with shared facilities, mostly because the hotel was quite pricey and I was only here for one night to meet a friend in the morning. The staff on the front desk were friendly when I checked in, especially Mark who checked to see if there was a fan available, and his colleague who showed me to my room. The bed was comfy, and the room was relatively clean, although one of the shared bathrooms didn't have a lock and had exposed wiring. I came back from a long day of exploring Ghent absolutely exhausted and ready to go to bed. Before I continue, I think I should say I had reasonable expectations about noise in the hotel. It's an old building, so I was happy to take the risk that a squeaky floorboard or a neighbour behind the thin walls might occasionally wake me up, but I tend to fall asleep again quite quickly so I wasn't too concerned. It seems the owner either doesn't have the same expectations, or doesn't care. I suspect the latter. The wedding that had booked the venue was having a loud party in the church across the courtyard from me, I can't remember when it began but I remember thinking it would surely end at around 11pm. When it got to midnight I went downstairs and talked to the gentleman looking after reception, and asked when the party would end. While it's annoying I figured maybe it would end at 1am, he replied that it was booked till 3am. I asked if I could be moved to another room but the hotel was fully booked. I suggested that if there's loud parties those rooms shouldn't be let out. The night watchman said that they get a lot of complaints when there's a wedding, but the owner doesn't care and does nothing about it. The party did eventually stop at around 3am, but not before getting even louder at 2am. In the morning, after maybe 2 or 3 hours sleep I asked for a refund at the desk. I suggested that those rooms shouldn't be let on party nights and I just got weak apologies and an offer of a free breakfast. I was meeting a friend for breakfast so I declined, and I'll take up the possibility of a refund with booking dot com. The manager said he couldn't refund me because "€60 is too much". I can't agree more, if I wanted to rent a room and not sleep I'd have stayed in Amsterdam and gone to De Wallen. Finally, I just want to add that I hold no animosity to the happy couple and I hope they had a great night and have a great future to come. The blame lies squarely on the greedy hotel owner who wants to get money not just from them, but also let out rooms that nobody could sleep in. Apologies for grammar/spelling. I obviously pretty tired. It's such a shame, this could be a fantastic hotel due to the history and ambiance of the property but the management is dire.

We enjoyed a nice, spacious room with lovely historic details in the „breed huis“. The room and private bathroom appeared to have been recently renovated and were very clean and tidy. Also the bed was comfortable to sleep in. The hotel is located very centrally and you can easily discover the town centre on foot. We were, however, disappointed with the rest of the hotel. There is a backlog of renovations and the furnishing seemed worn down. Although the breakfast itself is good, the room in which it is served is very uncomfortable as it is very noisy and more reminiscent of a youth hostel than a hotel. We were also irritated by the fact that laundry, parcels and other things were stored in the entrance hall around the clock, so guests had to squeeze through in order to get to their rooms.

Absolutely awful. Second hotel in Belgium, and second terrible experience. The place is gorgeous but clearly the owners couldn't care less about the history of the monastery. Once you arrive to the parking lot, there are 3 massive HVAC containers, buzzing like an airplane ready to take off. If that's not bad enough when you look behind you, it's easy to see that they decided to destroy the beautiful facade, to build this awful metal construction. The rooms follow this idea of destroying what was good and beautiful. Dirty, poorly arranged, and not like on the photos at all. Despite the excellent location, and despite being on a quiet street, it is absolutely impossible to sleep with that buzzing sound echoing all night and making your bed shake and tremble. 2 days there, 2 days we did sleep at all even with earplugs. Absolutely terrible experience.
