The Belgians are not known for their chic, interior design or cuisine. This small hotel seems not to have been decorated since the troops marched through in muddy boots in 1914. They have obviously cornered the market in battleship grey and dung coloured paint. The room was very small, and the shower room was a cupboard. Breakfast was DIY and uninspiring.
On the plus side it is very central, yet quiet. One Saturday a huge market was set up during the night without us hearing a sound. The rooms were warm, the water hot, and the small beds clean and very comfortable. There is a lift. All the Belgian people we met were extremely nice, friendly and helpful. Most people spoke good English. If you get tired of eel, inferior steak and endless chips, head for the best chocolate and cake shops in the world. It is not cheap to eat or drink out.
Don't miss the Last Post Ceremony every night at the Menin Gate at 8p.m.
