Vale de Moses is a perfect place to retreat. The location of it really supports that sense of being able to distance from every day life and ease into a different way to be with yourself and those around you. If you want to walk or swim or read or rest there is the opportunity to do all of these. The studio which is perched on the side of the mountain is magical with the views of the sky, the forest changing before your eyes Being at Vale de Moses is a nourishing time with the best vegetarian food ever and no one ever feels hungry. As a retreat space it is perfect and I can’t wait to return next year.

Over the last few years, I’ve been fortunate enough to have been on 5 yoga retreats in Italy, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. They were special experiences in every way. The same cannot be said for my experience at Vale de Moses! In fairness, the mountain surroundings were spectacular; the yoga and Qigong classes taught by our own instructor were wonderful as were my fellow yogis. The food was delicious and nutritious. However, the accommodation left a lot to be desired! Even though I had booked a single room, I ended up in a damp, dirty, very small and extremely uncomfortable shared room. Fortunately, my roommate, who also booked a single room, was lovely and gracious. I also had booked a couple of massages. On arrival, no treatments were available - - no apologies nor explanation were given for this. The piece de resistance for me was on day 3, wild pigs were allowed to run freely on the property. On one occasion, I was actually trapped in my room. I will not be returning to Vale de Moses and will not be recommending this retreat to anyone.…

I went on an organised yoga trip for 5 nights and was so pleased to get home. The positives: Beautiful location Excellent food Amazing yoga studio overlooking the mountains. The negatives: My room was disgusting. Dirty floor with a leaking roof. The shower outside sometimes had some hot water but not enough for 2 people to use. The bedding and blankets felt old and scratchy. There were alot of Vietnamese running loose on the paths being aggressive as they had babies with them. On the last day when leaving the rain poored down and we were stuck trying to get back up to the road. A 7 minute walk up a 45degree incline pulling our bags over wet dangerous cobblestones. Those with disabilities and joint problems were just left feeling abandoned with minimal help. It is no way to treat people and left them humiliated. Thank god I went with a group that pulled together and were lead by a great teacher and a lady with empathy and compassion. …

I spent x5 nights at this retreat. The positives; our yoga was led by our own yoga teacher and she was brilliant. The position of the yoga room gives stunning views of the valley & overall the scenery is amazing. The lunches were delicious. The negatives; i stayed in a tent. The floor was filthy, the bed had a sheet on with no mattress protector. Whilst each tent does have its own space, I couldn't believe that x1 tent was placed in basically a builders yard! It was surrounded by a cement mixer, bricks, rubbish and an large axe in a tree stump. Some of the tents were covered in black mildew. The solar showers were cold and the ones in the main block which were supposed to be gas heated were also cold. The towels were thread bare, I might as well of dried myself with a sheet. Despite advertising that you could book a massage, this was not available and hadn't been available apparently for sometime. The yoga room is quite small and accommodated x13 of us but I struggle to see how you could fit anymore in. Whilst there was adequate seating in the dining room on hard chairs, there was no adequate space to sit and relax together. Many of the pathways are very steep, stoney and unstable, therefore if you have any mobility or health issues this would be problematic and the website should warn of this. Overall this was a very disappointing stay in this retreat. The owners seemed to labour the point that we were guests in their home however they conveniently seemed to forget that we were actually paying guests! By the way the pictures on the website are far more flattering than in reality. The Sweat Lodge is still under construction! …

We have just returned from running a yoga and Pilates retreat at Vale de Moses and spending our special week in the mountains. Andrew and his family couldn’t be more accommodating, friendly or welcoming if they tried! I felt like we were immediately part of the family and welcomed in with open arms. The growth that Vale de Moses facilitated for all of our guests in so many ways was incredible - helping people to switch off from chaotic lives, become closer to nature, embrace compost toilets and creepy crawlies, and take on big adventures and physical challenges for our river swim! The food prepared by Sonia was flawless and on the day that she was unwell - the food prepared by Andrew and his family was equally flawless! Any little hiccups (like a fuse or lightbulb going) were fixed before we could even notice and any additional requests (like energy balls for our hike) were happily taken on board. Thanks so much to Andrew and the whole team for helping us to run our first retreat abroad so smoothly - sadly teaching in UK studios will now never compare to our mountain yoga shala! …

Vale De Moses provided the perfect place for a relaxing and restorative week. My introduction to yoga and what a wonderful place for that, ably led by the wonderful Fleur. Andrew and his team were great hosts, and the food, the walks, the treatments and the pools are all you need.I'll be back.

If you are considering whether to go to this beautiful slice of heaven in the Portuguese mountains, then just DO IT! I stayed for the beautiful spaciousness yoga retreat in November and it was truly life-changing. Everything was so beautiful from the delicious, fresh and flavourful food, the stunning yoga Shala, the cosy cottage that I stayed in and the mystical, magical nature surrounding. If I had to choose my favourite element of this paradise, it would be the mind-bending chats we had with Andrew and Von during lunch! They both made me and the other guests feel so welcomed and held throughout our stay and they are just lovely, fascinating people. I also had an incredible acupuncture and massage treatment from Von where she offered so much insight into my overall health. After spending a few nights there, something deep within me started to move. My mind became clearer, my body more easeful and mindful. I have carried this feeling with me since leaving. There is an energy in the valley that is truly special and unique, don't miss out x…

My time at Vale de Moses in early November was magical, from the moment Andy picked us up from the train station with a friendly smile and lots of stories, to admiring the sunrise over the mountains when I sadly said goodbye a week later. Von and Andy are truly amazing people, and I am so grateful for their warmth, kindness, and generosity in sharing their beautiful retreat space and offering an opportunity for healing and restoration. I was completely blown away by the delicious and nourishing food – wish I could have it every day! Other highlights were the meditative walk that Andy led and Von’s treatments. Von is an amazing healer, and she generously spent two hours with me, listening to my needs, affirming my concerns, and offering me a lovely Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and massage session. I loved doing yoga in the beautiful shala, I appreciated the relaxed way that Von led yoga classes – poses were more suggestions than instructions to follow, she encouraged us to do whatever our bodies were craving in the moment. If you’re new to yoga or more experienced, you’ll find your home here. Thank you Von, Andy, and all of the staff at Vale de Moses for a truly incredible experience. I can’t wait to return!…

I had an incredibly beautiful experience at Vale De Moses - the location is mystical and instills an immediate sense of calm. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect - I found the practice, workshops, food, and treatments authentic, nourishing, and harmonious. With the space that the schedule allowed - each day was as restorative or energetic as I desired. Outside of practice I had the joy of resting in the sounds of nature, wandering the trails, taking a dip and basking in the sun. During my stay and upon leaving I have never felt so light and so at home with myself. I'd like to carry this feeling with me forever. Thank you to Von, Andy, and the entire team for the sharing this space and making it so special. I look forward to returning in the future.
