We stayed in spare rooms in march 2009. 1st of all, it's not that easy to find it - they don't have any sign outside and you have to climb the stairs (3 floors) before you find the reception. The room was ugly, everything was very old and didn't look clean enough, it wasn't not renovated for years and years. the bathroom was not cleaned during the whole period of my staying there (if it was cleaned we didn't notice it), everywhere you could see hairs and it was all the time wet in there. I even didn't try to use the kitchen, because on the 1st day I saw insects there. The floor in the corridor was in a such an awful condition, that they just covered it with some dirty little carpets.
And it was very very cold. I can understand, that they don't have any central heating in Portugal (it was 14 C inside in the night in the room!!!), but they could at least provide you with some extra blankets. We had to sleep in our clothes to be able to sirvive till the morning.
