Panorama Hotel is fine - nice food, friendly staff, clean rooms, good pool and great views. Dont worry that the private beach is over the road - its manky anyway, and you'll need to travel a mile or so in either direction for good sandy beaches at Platanias or Chania Camping area on the nearby 3 penninsulas. We did research on the reviews in Chania and found them to be about right. The pool is fantastic and it never seemed crowded. The restaurant food is fine, buffet style but the setting is really lovely overlooking the sea and the sunsets.
