This hotel is by no means a 5*, nor does it try to be. It is, however, a perfect place to stay if you're looking for proximity to clear blue waters and lovely surroundings. You have to get a boat from the main town but it only takes a few minutes and the special miramare boat goes back and forth all day. We stayed here for one night in June and were one of only 2 couples staying overnight. The rooms are fairly small but the bed was comfy, the shower had hot water and there was also a fridge. You can sunbathe in your private garden and a few seconds later be in the sea, it really is that convenient. The bathrooms are very basic but they work and that's all we really wanted! The staff were very friendly and anytime we wanted to go into the main town the boat was there within minutes. We ate lunch at the hotel and went into the town for dinner (lovely restaurant called Omilos, follow the shoreline up the hill on the other side and it's tucked away, highly recommended!!). Hydra is a magical island. All you would want from Greece and yet only two hours by hydrofoil from Athens. Motorised vehicles of all sorts are banned and goods are moved around the island by donkey and mule. The best way to get around is by boat and both water buses and water taxis abound. Most of the action and most of the accommodation is to be found in Hydra Town. There are no chain hotels or modern monstrosities each hotel has its own unique character.

But Hydra Town has limited appeal for a small child and, as our party included 2 year old baby Emily we decided to try the Mira Mare Resort a 10 minute, €2 boat ride west of the town in Mandraki Bay. The resort , which describes itself as "one of the best hotels of Hydra", is on one of the few sandy beaches on the island and they have set up very child friendly facilities including water trampolines and swings as well as safe swimming areas.
