The green embankments, surrounding our park are the remains of a fortress, Farjestadens Skans.

You are indeed in "the middle of history", here at Hotel Skansen. The fortress is from the early 1600's and was then called "Krakeskars Skans". It probably played an important part at the time of the Danish invasion 1611. Around 1700 a district-courthouse was constructed inside the fortress.

The buildings you see today were built 1811, and while they originally served as a courthouse, they have since 1901 been a hotel.

We will do our very best to make your stay comfortable and joyful.

Is anything missing or is it something you desire? Please let us know - We will do our best to fulfil your wishes.

Fantastic location, close to the water, and amenities, plus a few good restaurants. Renovations are needed, The staff could be more welcoming. I can’t say what the spa is like because we didn’t feel like spending more money when we weren’t very impressed with what we received with our booking

Hotel's Favourite
We took a trip to Öland, an island on the east coast of Sweden. We booked two rooms in this hotel for four people. Our rooms were in the Spa area of the hotel which is in the annexe. Rooms were average size. Beds were a little uncomfortable, that -roll together in the middle- problem, but pillows were good. This is a hotel very proud of its whiskey range and offers whiskey tastings. It has a very extensive whiskey selection. As it is situated on the harbour side it is very noisy in the morning with the seagulls squawking, even closing the windows didn’t help. So bring ear plugs! We ate one night in the hotel. We had a starter of garlic bread, a beetroot carpaccio and the shrimp. Two of us had lamb and two had steak. For dessert we had the terrine which was basically a brownie and the panna cotta. The terrine was dry, a bit disappointing. But overall it was a very good meal, sitting outside on the veranda enjoying the evening sunset. We would gladly have eaten there again. The breakfast was good. There was a good selection to choose from, even Swedish meatballs. My only gripe was that there was an extra charge for lattes/cappuccinos. Otherwise it was coffee from a machine. I’ve had worse! We would probably stay here again, just the early morning seagulls are an issue. But if not, we would certainly eat there again.

Our party of 5 visited the restaurant for the autumn buffet for lunch. The food was good but the service destroyed the experience. The hostess showed us to the table and said nothing more. We tried to get attention to order drinks but were ignored. When we finally got someone’s attention they came over and said it looks like you want something. We asked if we could have some water to start with. We were then ignored and no one came back to ask if we wanted anything else to drink . The waiter cleared our plates and dropped food on the floor and just left it. We ended cleaning g it up so no one would slip on it. When it came time for dessert we asked a question about one of the desserts and received a very curt and rude reply . Finally giving up we went to pay. We were asked what we had to drink, a bit rich as we were never asked . I told the lady this but she just ignored it. In the end we were charged 19 sek for tap water . What could have been a nice experience with a different review ended with all of us saying we wouldn’t return. Really 19 sek for one caraf of water for a 259 pp sek buffet?

The room was very small and extremely hot, the provided fan did little to help us cool down. We would get a much better room for the same price on any other hotel we've stayed the night. The spa area shouldn't be called a spa area with only 2 saunas, a jacuzzi and a small pool. Inside the relax it's a lot of sounds from the pool that makes it hard to relax also. We didn't try the food because of the mixed reviews and the price so opinion there. the included breakfast though was superb, a little bit of everything but not lacking in my opinion. The bread supposedly came from a local baker which was amazing. Overall would not recommend.

Hi! Thank you for your review and stay at our hotel. I am happy to hear that you liked the breakfast buffet! We are aware about the development potential of the relax area and if all goes as planed, the renovation and expansion will start in 2022. For your next stay I recommend that you book our popular standard room plus with or without balcony. They have AC and are modern, I hope that you would like them! I have mixed feelings about this place. I actually think that it’s a pretty good mid-range property with a somewhat scenic location. We have stayed in a suite before and this time we had a higher category standard room. The room was in a good condition and well-cleaned. We didn’t experience any issues. However, the whole stay, breakfast offering etc just felt a bit too much ”budget”. This room should have cost perhaps 1100-1300 SEK and not the 2000 SEK it regularly retails for, even off-peak. I just feel that their pricing is way off considering the quality on offer and the competition. This won’t keep me from returning when I’m in the area though, I just feel that it’s poor ”bang for the buck”.

We booked this hotel last minute and enjoyed our stay at the hotel. It was on the expensive side but we upgraded to a superior room. It is located conveniently when you just cross the bridge from Kalmar, Borgholm, beaches and Långe Jan. So easy to get everywhere! The hotel was packed to capacity so we did feel a bit worried with the corona virus pandemic. However they took great precautions. They had two separate breakfast buffets and had plenty of staff navigating people. Even if a lot of the guests didn't stick to rules, it was still a great job done from the hotel. side. I would recommend staying here if you want to explore the island and want a good place to stay, more so then to stay at the hotel for exploring the hotel.

Overall I enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Skansen. I think the hotel is conveniently located, offers good access to a lot of restaurants and attractions, and is near the water. I would suggest booking a suite as the other rooms are quite small (very Swedish style hotel rooms). We looked at two rooms prior to upgrading to a suite for additional space, the front desk staff was especially accommodating and kind during my request for a new room. We had spa access but only took advantage of the space once for an hour during our stay. Due to coronavirus policies we had to book a time at the spa, this was convenient because there were not many other people at the spa. That said, I did not think the spa facilities were clean to begin with. The gym at the hotel is actually a proper gym facility located 2-3 minutes walk from the hotel. Speaking to the restaurant, I had a good dinner the first evening of our stay. This was overshadowed by actions of the (presumably) kitchen manager the next day at breakfast. In the breakfast area there was a selection of disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and gloves guests and staff could use. I was waiting for a roll when the manager was refilling the bread basket, I observed he started using a set of tongs, then switched to using bare hands, touching every single piece of bread, moments after touching the lid handles on the hot items. I want to clarify I would never find this behavior acceptable under any circumstance, let alone when coronavirus is a major global issue. When I asked the manager why he wasn’t wearing gloves his reply was, “because I work here.” Suffice to say I did not feel safe or comfortable returning to the breakfast or restaurant after this interaction. Again, overall a good stay at the Hotel Skansen. My suggestion to management would be to emphasize the importance of sanitary practices throughout the hotel and even if you do not believe exposure risks exist, send a signal to guests that you care and take the necessary precautions.

Hi Karl! Thank you for your feedback, We are glad to hear that you had a nice stay and liked the service at the front desk! The behavior from the staff at the breakfast sounds strange, the staff at all departments knows our protocol and in these times is it more important then ever. I'm sorry for the interaction, of course, all our guests should feel safe staying at our hotel. I hope that you will give us a second chance in the future. Best regards Amanda, Hotel Skansen
