Set on a quiet little Lake Lillbjörken is Svartå Herrgård, a Swedish country inn, an inviting stop halfway between Stockholm and Gothenburg. The inn consists of an elegant 1782 manor house, plus an annex. The main building has an elegant parlor and inviting dining rooms on the ground floor; guest rooms on the second floor, and a billard room, sauna, and casual gathering room in the basement. Svartå is a good place to relax with a book, canoe on the lake, or take a quiet walk; you can also use it as a base to explore castles, gardens, and museums in nearby Orebro, Motala, Vadstena, and other area towns. Our room was attractive and comfortable, with a lake view; it had typical Swedish twin beds, but it was no problem to push them together. The staff at Svartå is friendly, helpful, and gracious; the Swedish cuisine was tasty and fresh. Although popular for small conference and meetings, it would make a relaxing escape for anyone looking to experience the Swedish countryside.
