Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a beautiful and charming place to stay. Excellent restaurant. I fully recommend. All the staff are smiling and attentive. I was there for 2 days for business trip. The place is calm and the bed was perfect for a restful night. There is a big choice for the breakfast.

Lovely hotel with great staff. Ate far too much as the food was amazing and hot when it got to the table considering there were 50 of us all eating at the same time. Rooms were very comfortable and with all you needed. Had a great Xmas. Thank you all at the castle. Karen xx

If i wanted bed and breakfast as opposed to an expensive hotel room thats what i would have booked. The stay was ok, central location, ok room, but I was surprised to get a telephone call from reception asking why i had not checked out at 10? I had no idea 10 was checkout time, my reservation through Egencia didn’t say so. I was told there was a sign at reception, but you can’t read that when booking a room. I was told i could pay £10 to stay an extra hour. This is a first for me in 30 years of traveling the world. I have never stayed at any hotel with less than an 11am checkout. I was told its because “we are very busy”. Well, so am I and that is why i book hotels rooms as opposed to B&B so that I can work in the morning. They were also too busy to print a receipt. I asked where the receipt was and was given the reply “you didn’t ask for one”. I’ll not be returning. £10 seems more important that repeat bookings

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent stay at our hotel. We apologise for any confusion or inconvenience you experienced during your stay. We would like to clarify that we have already reached out to you directly to address your concerns. We understand that the check-out time was not communicated clearly to you, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please note that we have taken your comments into consideration and will work towards ensuring that all future guests are informed about our check-out policies. Regarding the request for a receipt, we don’t generally print these as we try to minimise paper usage. We are happy to print on request or alternatively email. We appreciate your feedback as it helps us improve our services and guest experience. If there is anything else we can do to rectify the situation or assist you further, please do not hesitate to let us know. We hope to have the opportunity to regain your trust and welcome you back in the future. Best regards, The Castle Team

Every tour of England should include a stay in a hotel like The Castle at Taunton, the county town of Sommerset. It's authentically historic (an 18th century reconstruction of the former 12th century Norman fortress, Taunton Castle) and engagingly creaky. Anyone looking for a place to film a remake of "The Canterville Ghost" should come here. It even has that anachronism in modern hotelry: a heavy door key to clang in your pocket. The elevator has a mind of its own and skipped our floor a couple of times. The anamoly is Brazz, its sleek, modernistic restaurant. The staff was pleasant but short-handed and overworked. It's within walking distance of the railway station but if you have bags and an early morning train be sure to have the receptionist book you a taxi the night before. Even having done this, we were told they weren't sure if a taxi would come because there aren't many and they're all taking kids to school in the morning. Thanks to our guide's intervention we did end up getting a taxi in time. This family-owned hotel may not be the cup of tea of those looking for chain hotel newness, but we enjoyed the huge room and haunted English country manor feel of it.

Dear kath0neal Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at The Castle. We are a historic building that has operated as a place of lodging for over 400 years, and certainly don't aim for a chain hotel feel. It's great to hear that our team in both Brazz & at the reception desk looked after you throughout your visit. We hope to see you again. Best wishes The Castle Team

I have stayed at The Castle before, in July 2021, and loved my stay. I wanted to take my Civil Partner (Greg) of 23 years here as he had never stayed. The first issue was trying to access the app to pay for the NCP parking at the hotel. It was a total nightmare that left my husband fuming! Once this was finally sorted, we were able to check in 30 mins early, which was great. The next issue, and this was the biggest issue, was as a same sex couple, we were greeted by a delightful ‘welcome card’ addressed to Mr and Mrs Baker!! 😡. The card then went on to wish us a happy anniversary, which it wasn’t. This unfortunately had the wrong effect and completely deflated me. An easy mistake to make I hear you cry in the defence of the hotel. Maybe so, but this sort of thing should not be happening. I hope the Hotel ensures that this does not happen again.

Dear Chrisgamery, Firstly thank you for taking the time to review your visit to The Castle. We are obviously very disapointed to read your thoughts. We have fed back to our App partner the issues surrounding it & have actually now installed a payment terminal to ensure these problems are not repeated. We're glad that we were able to check you in earlier than our adbertised time, & our team will always aim to do so to ensure our guests have a great stay with us. In relation to the card in the room, we have investigated into this & it appears that on the 15th of May our reception team recieved a call asking for an anniversary card to be placed in the room and addressed as it was written. Unfortunatley our logs do not have the details of the caller to the hotel. We of course apologise that this was incorrect & for any offence caused. The Castle has always been an inclusive venue throughout our long history, If you have time please research Gerald Chapman who was a member of the family who own the hotel. We show our support also by flying the Pride flag whne supporting the local parades. We also have a very diverse workforce, and do not accept any form of discrimination for any reason amongst our team.

I recently booked a Sunday Champagne afternoon tea for 3, for a special occasion, and it was just perfect! The staff were very attentive and polite and the seating was very comfortable. This all helped to create a wonderful relaxed atmosphere, in a beautiful building. The food was excellent, one of us is vegetarian, but this proved to be no problem at all. A selection of sandwiches, warm scones, cakes and desserts, cream and jam, with a pot of tea or coffee, all this topped off with a lovely flute of champagne!! It is quite expensive, but it doesn't hurt to have a special treat now and again, and this was worth every penny!!

An English Country House style hotel in the middle of Taunton. The standards rooms are a bit small, the delux rooms a decent size with good bed and bathrooms but are very much at the top-end if the price range. Parking is £10 per day at an NCP just beside the hotel so not secure but reasonably priced. The hotel fabric is showing “faded elegance” but the staff, whilst all young and finding their way sometimes, are the hotel’s best feature. Even when things went awry it wasn’t through lack of effort. There are several lounge areas of different sizes which are good for relaxing with friends rather than squeezing into a room. The bar is OK but a little cold as the large external door gives a stiff breeze whenever it’s opened. We (group of 15) ate in the Brazz restaurant one evening which was very disappointing - well below the standard we had hoped for. The food was poorly prepared with most meals leaving the diner dissatisfied - many better options in easy walking distance. In summary - if you want a country house experience with great staff it’s a reasonable option, just go out for lunch and dinner.
