This amazing old Hotel dates from 1465 and my room, 5 is haunted by a young chambermaid called Alice Kathryn Millar, foully done to death by her lover in 1636!! Now i didn't see the poor soul during my stay, however other than adding an ensuite bathroom I would imagine the room to be little changed. Warren Browning the Manager... More

If you want neatly grouted tiles, power showers and fluffy towels go somewhere else and be dull and unappreciative there! If you want the unique Colchester experience then here it is. It's character begins with limed oak panels, creaky sloping floors and much talk of hauntings. Your now within walking distance of Colchester's splendid mix of unique classy shops, bars... More

We had a two night stay here and enjoyed every minute. Perfectly situated for shops and restaurants. We stayed in the four poster bed room and we were very comfortable. It is full of history and character and quite a unique place to stay. The staff were very friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We were a bit... More

superb old inn in the centre of town. walking distance to everything. really excellent rooms ( if small in newer rear wing) which are well appointed. good room service and afternoon tea in lounge is a delight. good price if you catch an offer, and really good bars adjacent.

My partner booked this hotel without consulting me and then I read the comments on tripadvisor so I was prepared for disappointment. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay in The Red Lion Hotel. I stayed at this hotel for one night when travelling for work. The location is very central which is good. The wattle and daub building itself is very old and cites its dining room as being the site of Oliver Cromwell's first parliament. However the rooms are very outdated and the hotel badly needs to be refurbished. The common areas... More
