My husband and I booked a one night stay in the hotel as we were attending a show in Colchester the following day. I must say I was a bit hesitant about staying at the hotel when my husband said he had booked us to stay there, however on arrival I was pleasantly surprised. I could tell the Hotel is... more

Looking for a nice sunday lunch in Colchester we decided to try the George. We were celebrating and thought we'd get something a bit above a sunday pub lunch. Upon entering the George we waited by the restaurant area for a few minutes waiting to be seated, eventually we were asked if we needed help. We asked for a table... more

Thank you for your comments with reference to your recent visit to The George. I have discussed your comments with both our Head Chef and Food and Beverage Manager and we will be re-training our staff to ensure this does not happen again. Additional signage has been displayed to explain our opening times and procedures on Sunday lunch, which included...

oh my god..... this was a disaster from the start.... check in was grand, parking grand... location is handy as it is on the high street... but thats all the good!!!! We were sat in the lobby while someone literally came in the front door and threw a pint all over 1 member off staff.... At the same time the manager... more

After reading reviews and viewing photos of the exterior, I was cautious booking this hotel but I came away having enjoyed my stay very much. People must remember the hotel is old and historical. It is absolutely charming with its creaky sloping floors and smells of years gone by. Yes, the stairs and narrow hallways make hauling luggage a challenge(front... more

I visited The George today with a friend for lunch. We waited a long time to be served and when our food came we were surprised by the small portions. We paid £7.25 for Macaroni Cheese and chips and we had hardly any chips at all. My friend counted hers - 7!!!!!!!! We asked the waitress for a proper portion.... more

When I first visited the George Hotel in March 2009, I was swept away by the antique furnishings, wood beams, and parlor atmosphere in the lounge area. I was asked by a friend to look at the reception room where I might consider booking for my wedding reception. It was adorable, the table settings were sparkling and the bar looked... more

I was travelling with a colleague who had stayed at the George before, and what he told me in advance was more or less what I experienced. As a pub, the George is cosy and quaint - after all, it has hundreds of years of history as a coaching inn in England's oldest town - but as a hotel it... more

This centrally situated hotel has plenty of parking spaces at the rear. It is in easy reach of the shops and castle museum, although the nightlife in the High St may be "lively" for those wishing a quiet stroll around the town after dark. The reception area is very cramped ensuring a wait if a group of people are assembling... more

Thank you for your comments. I am sorry to hear you did not feel that you received good service from my Reception team during your recent stay and that the hotel and your room were not what your expected. The hotel is over 500 years old and together with it’s historical features has steep stairs but does not have the...

Although we were a bit disappointed seeing the hotel from outside once we were inside we were pleasantly surprised at how large it was . Our booking had not been registered even though it was booked online the day before, but a room was available. The room was just ok really, but were were shocked at the stains on the... more

We always visit the George for lunch whenever shopping in Colchester. Never had a problem before but this time was not an enjoyable experience. The food was ok but over priced (£4.95 for a cold beef sandwich). The service was appailling, the waiter is better suited to working in fast food outlet, he cleared the table while somebody was still... more
