A very pretty hotel - all tudor beams etc as would be expected from a fourteenth century building, however this did mean that the floorboards outside of the rooms creak VERY loudly whenever anyone walks by. It is also very poorly soundproofed against the traffic which goes by on all sides. I accept that there is probably little that the... more

Extremely rude staff. We tried to cancel a night because of our car breaking down, and they basically said 'we don't care'. When I mentioned customer service, they also mentioned they didn't care. Having worked with the hotel industry, I've never spoken to such unfriendly and uncaring staff. I would not recomment if you are looking for good and kind... more

The Ale is excellent. The hand pumps are very popular. Try a Adnams Broadside. The Bar area has good vibes. Decent Manager. Does not rush you out the door. The Hotel is apparently Haunted. Used to be a Coach House transporting prisoners to the gallows in London. Has an old jail cell in the basement with some original graffiti. The... more

I would say that the hotel was between average and above average. The old part of the hotel is lovely, very welcoming and very attractive. The staff were polite and friendly and very helpful and could not be faulted, I would also reccommend the food (evening meals) which was really very good and was obviously popular with the numbers of... more

We were accommodated here for 3 nights by the Essex University Summer School because Wivenhoe House (see other reviews) was full. We had a double room in the newer part of the hotel which was generally OK except that the double bed mattress was too soft and the pillows were cheap, non-feather ones. The bathroom was very ordinary with shelving... more

We booked this hotel for a leisure trip and went for the more expensive executive room hoping for a bit of luxury, it was quite expensive at £120 a night so we were expecting something a little special. The hotel is in an excellent location, a nice easy walk to the town centre but not so close that it's noisy.... more

Stayed for one night on business, and after a recent bad experience at the Red Lion in Colchester I was not looking forward to a similar stay here. However upon arrival I was plesently suprised, the hotel is well appointed and comfortable, bedroom was large welcoming with Tea/Coffe Buscuits and bottled water, TV movies, internet and games available etc There... more

The Rose and Crown is definitely a unique place to stay in Colchester. It has a very long history, which only adds to its charm. We stayed in the newer part of the hotel and our room was pleasant. It was at the end of the newer part, so the walk to and from was long and winding and not... more

We spent two nights in that hotel (Friday and Saturday). Since we stayed in the old part of the hotel, there was no air condition and due to the high temperatures we would have liked to sleep with the windows open. But as there were two weddings, guests gathered outside our window for a talk and a smoke. So there... more

I stayed here for work one night last week. The receptionist was very friendly and assisted me whilst another guest was fussing about. My room no. 209 had twin beds and was exceedingly warm due to the good weather but when opening the sash windows a lot of noise from the road outside came in. I then went into the... more
