In the peak months some of the towns and villages in the Lake District National Park can get a bit hectic, which is not what you want from a Romantic rural holiday, so we were delighted to come across Hall Hills which is defintely off the beaten track and genuinely quiet. It's in an attractive part of Cumbria, not amongst the hills of the Lake District but in gently rolling Cumbrian countryside. Nice views and very nice 4-star and 5-star self-catering cottages. Very tasteful with lots of rustic charm (the buildings are centuries old apparently) but well-equipped and designed to modern standards with open-plan living areas and nice furnishings. Although outside the Lake District National Park it was nevertheless handy for the Lakes - it was only a 20-minute drive into Keswick, for instance - and there are lots of other places worth visiting nearby - villages like Caldbeck, for instance. It was also handy being so close to Carlisle, which has good shopping. more
