The owners were friendly and helpful without being over-the-top about things. The room was clean, comfortable and characterful, providing us with an ideal base for our trip to the region. We were made to feel very welcome but also felt comfortable that we could come and go as we pleased. The setting is quiet and peaceful which allowed for an... more

The Bear strikes just the right balance between friendliness and making you feel that, once you've arrived, it's your home and you're absolutely free to come and go as you please. I had a single room, which was clean, tidy and cosy: I would have preferred not to have shared a bathroom, but there are other rooms that are en... more

An ideal base in Hay-on-Wye. This B&B exceeded our expectations not only for the comfort of the room but the excellent freshly cooked breakfast and packed lunch provided on request. All food was fairtrade, organic and absolutely delicious! Jon and Sue provide excellent hospitality and are on hand to offer tourist and local information to enhance your stay. We would... more

A friend of mine recommended the Bear to me after she stayed there. I am not a fussy traveller, but as I was travelling with my father (who's in his 60s) I wasn't sure if it would suit us both - he's a bit fussier than I am. Luckily, it turned out to be perfect for both of us. An... more

Thanks to the reviewer for their kind words. I agree that our car park is a bit "squeezy" but we are very lucky in an old town like this, built long before cars were ever dreamed of, to have any parking space at all. I could also mention that there is free parking on the street outside our house.

I booked based on the reviews here and I have to say they are all very accurate. The Bear is a clean, quiet and comfortable B&B, the breakfasts are excellent and the hosts pleasant and helpful. I arrived in Hay on the bus from Hereford and The Bear is only a 5 minute walk from the bus stop. I travelled... more

Accommodation with character in a quiet but central location. Room small but quaint - no space for wardrobe or chairs but coat hangers provided. Shared bathroom down passageway with shower over bath. Breakfast, featuring delicious fresh fruit salad, is served in very pleasant dining room at a shared table. Parking quite tight and you have to reverse out down a... more

If you stay at one B&B in your life, let it be this one! The Bear B&B, set right in the heart of Hay-on-Wye, is truly an experience in of itself. Though we arrived very early in the day, we were met by nothing but warm welcomes. Jon and Sue immediately offered to let us keep our bags at the... more

This is your typical British B&B. The B&B is located in a very old building and has pell-mell layout. Overall, I liked the room, meals and the inn keeper but my taste are a little more modern. However, you are not going to find that type of lodging in Hay-on-Wye so if travel to this wonderful little town in Wales... more

We have just returned from an excellent short break in Hay-on-Wye and were very impressed with the toen in general and particularly our accomodation. We had chosen it from the website and it fully lived up to all that was advertised. Very central in position; friendly, helpful service from the owners, lovely quirky accomodation maintained to a high standard. We'd... more
