We needed somewhere inexpensive to stay for one night so we could get to an event early the next morning, and the Royal Oak was in the right place at the right time.
Dead easy to find, lots of parking, very few frills (no hairdryer, no biscuits) but perfectly adequate. Decor of the corridors left a bit to be desired, but the bed was tolerable and the room and bathroom clean and convenient. Pub downstairs was pleasant and not busy - no noise bothered us at all.
Not the warmest place I've ever stayed, even in August, so pack pyjamas if you feel the cold.
However, at £40 a night for a double, including a rather good full English breakfast we felt we had absolutely nothing to complain about.
(NB if you feel the need to supplement the meagre milk supplies for in-room tea and coffee making, there's a shop up the High St that's open long hours.)
