My husband and I stayed in a self-catering 'cottage' which looked more like a garage/workshop extension on the main hall, called 'Feathers'. The back faced old sheds and a full skip and outside our bedroom window was a dead rat. We saw several rats during our weeks stay which was not unexpected as the location is rural but on our last day we realised that the fresh fruit and veg sold by the farm shop - displayed outside - was there permanently day and night for anything to nibble at or walk over.
The inside of the 'cottage' was the filthiest place I have ever stayed in. It smelled musty because of the shower/toilet being off the front room - only one door away from the kitchen which I think is illegal. The walls and paintwork - mainly in the living area - were covered in years worth of dirt, hand prints, scuffs and dead insects.
