I have never been a big fan of hotels in small scottish towns and generally only stay there on business. This place was better than i expected though not cheap. The food in the dining room was pretty poor: my local steak was smothered in a tasteless sauce. The best part was breakfast which I was delighted to see was... more

What a disappointment! After paying extra for "seaview rooms", my traveling companion and I were dismayed to find ourselves with really dated accommodations... worn, old wall-paper and carpet, stuffy rooms, cheap and coarse bedding package. The rooms were nothing like the picture in the Ayre Hotel on-line ad. The linens were actually weird... the bottom sheet (there was no top... more

We spent three nights at the Ayre Hotel. From the moment we arrived we were impressed with the personal service, cleanliness and warmth of the establishment. Kirkwall's independent restaurants are not famed as the gourmet centres of the universe, so we dined in the hotel's own restaurant and found the food fantastic and very reasonably priced - particularly the seafood.... more

2 nights in the Ayre, reception staff friendly and helpful. Evening meal and breakfast nice, again staff helpful and friendly. Unfortunately two very disturbed nights sleep due to the thin walls. You could hear everything from the rooms next door and above. Loud tvs, talking, toilets, and what sounded like bodies being dragged around! Would not recommend for anyone who... more

This Hotel was disappointing because it is quite expensive and is advertised as a high-class hotel. On our arrival the hotel looked quite shabby and the receptionist was rather rude and totally unprofessional which created a very poor first impression. Our room and integral bathroom were very small with poor quality fixtures and fittings. A below average hotel that doesn't... more

I stayed at The Ayre over three cold January days. This was my first visit to Orkney and by the time I had done the tube / airport / airport / taxi combo, I had spent 10 hours feeling uncomfortable. So, it was great to get a quick and polite check - in and then open the door to one... more

We were booked into the Ayre Hotel as part of an overnight Orkney tour and were very pleased with our stay. We had two rooms, both with harbor view. The rooms were comfortable and well appointed, with a nice bathroom, comfortable bed and blackout drapes that thankfully worked well. I noticed none of the previously reported problems such as noise... more

We stayed at 'The Ayre Hotel' whilst working on Orkney. After a couple of weeks of looking for reviews on certain hotels, we decided on this one. We stay all over the country and find trip advisor a useful source of information. We would highly recommend anyone to stay here, whether you are on business or pleasure. On our first... more

Me and my new husband stayed at the hotel as party of our honeymoon, we requested breakfast in our room on our first morning, the breakfast was very well presented and tasted even better. All the staff at the hotel were very well mannered and most helpful to all our requests. The rooms were lovely and as it was our... more

We stayed for three nights at the Ayre hotel. The room was ok, with a good view over Kirkwall bay. However, we were forced to move rooms after my girlfriend woke up covered in bed bug bites after the first night. The management gave us a small discount and we moved rooms - no problems during the last two nights.... more
