Just returned from a 2 night stay and can honestly say it was very nice. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly reception lady who checked our room was ready. We had room 5 which was a lovely upper bay shaped room with nice bed and compact but nice bathroom. The only negative was the busy road although this did not bother us. The breakfast as other people have said was lovely and well cooked and delivered hot to your table. On our second night we could not make up our mind where to eat and due to walking nearly 15 miles decided to eat at the hotel. The food was very good and my wife's special which was salmon with rice was amazing! I just went for a spicy bean burger and this was also tasty. Some people will say it is showing signs of age however we found the whole place quirky and clean and the staff were all amazing Many Thanks Simon and Dawn

Attended a lunch function at this hotel with around 80 people. An enjoyable tasty meal and attentive staff, who worked hard. Only issue was that the meals took a while to emerge for each course. Would go again.

A nice old building in a bit of a residential area. Its fine as a hotel and I'd be happy to return. However there are elements of 'Creaky-English' in the style. The room was comfortable. A little chilly to walk into, I naturally turned the radiator on, only to find that a few hours later it was a sauna, so turned it off again. Good tea making facilities. Good car parking, although the entrance is a bit hidden, and I drove past it twice (in the dark) missing it each time. From the car park the signage to the reception could be a little more clear. The staff we met were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was huge - and its not often nowadays that you get proper fried bread. Its gone quite out of fashion. I suppose it might be to do with the fact that it's a heart-attack right there at the start of the day. At breakfast - you'll be fine if you're a tea drinker. They love massive teapots and you'll drown in tea. Coffee however is different matter - its instant and you make it yourself. I do prefer a fresh coffee - cafetiere for preference. A few things I can't comment on; Wifi - I didn't use it. I don't think there is a gym or any such facilities. The restaurant was closed for the evening so I can't comment on the food (other than the breakfast). We didn't use the bar - on account of going out to eat - but it did look like on another occasion I could have happily spent the evening there. Overall - yes I'd be happy to stay again if looking for something in this area.

We could not fault our stay at the Newtown House Hotel. We arrived jet lagged from California, slightly early for the checking in time. The member of staff on the reception was incredibly helpful and welcoming and checked the room was ready, before handing us the key. We stayed in the family room, which was spacious with every amenity we required (drink making facilities/ WiFi/ iron/ fan/ extra pillows/ etc). Every single member of staff that we met went above and beyond in every aspect, maki sure we had a comfortable stay. As mentioned in some other reviews, it is true that the bathroom perhaps could do with a little bit of tlc, but for the price we paid for the room, this was not an issue at all, and it was nice to have a full size bath. The breakfast was freshly cooked to order, with toast/ yogurt/ cereals/ tea, coffee and juice available in the breakfast room. We were so impressed with our stay, we booked the final weekend of our vacation back at the hotel! Thank you to all of the staff for our wonderful stay. We will definitely be back the next time we are visiting the area.

Went for a Pre arranged Christmas lunch, food started to arrive nearly one hour after the booked time, no one manning the bar in the function room, no staff came to apologise for the delay, if you wanted a drink you had to get up from your table, walk along the long corridor to the bar then carry it back to your table. Everything had been pre ordered in advance, you had to ask for the basics like cranberry sauce, water etc. The food when it did arrive was Luke warm, soggy roast potatoes swimming in gravy over Luke warm turkey slices, I Couldn’t even get my fork into the parsnip it was so hard, pretty awful really considering the limited choice from which every meal was preordered from. The staff struggled to cope they tried their best but Clearly had no experience. Thank goodness the company was convivial which made up for a really dreadful lunch.

A clean hotel with nice staff but not possible to sleep here properly when a function is on. Was given the family room above a wedding that I had no idea was happening and I cannot describe how loud it is. 3 year old finally crashed, crying, at 10pm. 5 year old still awake and crying at 11.30pm begging for the noise to stop. It’s honestly UNBEARABLE. I believe it to be morally corrupt that they would accept our booking without checking we were part of the wedding party and were prepared not to sleep until after midnight. Obviously we would have cancelled and gone somewhere else as we were just a quiet unsuspecting family hoping for a lovely overnight beach stay for the weekend. AWFUL experience, please be warned!

Response from Hotel Manager, General Manager at Newtown House Hotel
Responded 29 Sept 2023
Dear alip871, Thank you for your review, I'm sorry that your stay wasn't comfortable. We do our absolute best to make sure that all our guests have an enjoyable stay. However there was an oversite to let you know about a wedding normally you are told on check in but this clearly has not happened - this receptionist has received further training about this matter. On hearing about your discomfort we offered you another room away where it was a bit quieter or even separate rooms which would have been even more quiet, its a shame that you couldn't take us up on the offer. The morning you were also offered a refund its a shame this wasn't enough to make you more comfortable or help resolve the issue.

My family and I stayed for nearly two nights on the 22nd of August. On the second night I woke very itchy and couldn’t sleep because I was so itchy. My leg had a long line of bites and at first I thought it was mosquitoes I was worried that my children who were in separate beds would be bitten too but they were fine. After checking the room for mosquitoes and not finding anything I checked my bed, I found three bed bugs. This was at 3am on the second night. I clouldn’t stay in the room another minute. My mother and little niece and nephew were staying in room 10 as we had all traveled to Hayling Island in the same car. I didn’t want to move into their rooms in case I spread the infestation to them. So we all packed up and left the hotel at 4am. By the time I got home I had 50 bites and by the next day there were 80 bites on my legs, hands, arms neck and face. I later read it takes days for bed bug bites to show so it looks like they feasted on me for almost two nights. When we left I took photos of the bugs and informed the night porter why we were leaving. I gave him my contact details for someone from the hotel to call me in the morning. When we got home I threw away my bag, pjs, shoes and other items. Then had to hot wash and tumble dry all mine and my children’s clothes. As well as being incredibly itchy and tired I didn’t sleep as everything had to be cleaned. The next day the hotel never called. We contacted them on them by email and they disputed I had even been bitten by bed bugs as they couldn’t find any in the room. Even though I had squashed them and left them on the sheets. I then sent over the photos of the bugs and they then did admit the bugs were in the room and finally agreed to get the room fumigated. If I hadn’t had photo evidence I don’t think they would have even got pest control in. I feel we should have refunded both rooms 27 and 10 but the hotel said that they would only refund my room (27) as it was not their fault that my mum and I had travelled in the same car! Also they would not compensate me for the loss of my belongings and the disappointment and discomfort I had suffered. I had asked for £310 compensation to cover loss of property and money I had spent on medicine and the disappointment and discomfort we had for ending the holiday early and the fact that I was very itchy for two weeks, not to mention the inconvenience of working with 80 bites which I needed to keep covered. I understand as I have no way of proving the hotel was negligible in their housekeeping duty’s that I can not receive any compensation for my discomfort. So let this review be a record of the event, so others may use it as evidence if they are bitten at the hotel too. I hope no one else has to suffer like I have, I was itching for over two weeks and I still have the bite marks all over my body a month later. I’m just thankful it was me that was bitten and not my children. I’ve happily stayed at Newtown House for many years but never again. Not only for the bed bugs but also the very poor customer service afterwards.

We went to the Newtown House Hotel on Saturday 5th August for an evening Wedding reception. It had been requested that there be gluten free food for both the main and evening reception. I understand there was a problem at the main reception and in the evening, all the"normal food" was brought out but no sign of gluten free. When a waiter was asked about it we were informed it would be 5 minutes. Some pizza was brought out and I was told ok for me. Just about to eat it when I was told it wasn't. Eventually got some gf pizza and bread and butter (no knife) at about 9.30 pm. Very poor show Newtown House 😣

Hotel is very tired and very much in need of some TLC our room was quite big and clean but I do not have mould around my bath I don’t expect to pay £150 for the privilege when asked for another room I was told the hotel was full which was clearly untrue as there were only 3 cars in the car park and 2 people in the bar will not be staying again
