I stayed at the Swallow for 5 nights from 5th July on business and I do agree that the hotel is very dated and in need of a lick of paint. Wallpaper is peeling off in many places. However, the friendly staff who cannot do enough for you do compensate this in many ways. Gladys on reception is a credit... more

Stayed here for 1 night whilst attending a concert nearby. Check in was very quick and easy. Staff on reception polite and gave information required. We were allocated a room on the 6th floor at the front of the hotel which gave a view over Gateshead and could see the bridges over the Tyne which i was pleased with. The... more

I intended staying at the Springfield Hotel (I'd been there before and it was OK) along the road. On arrival I found it to be closed hence the reason I couldn't book a room online. I arrived at the Swallow and couldn't find a parking space in the small car park outside so opted to leave the van on the... more

Hotel is very dated but is clean enough, good breakfast, good value(£52 for one night b&b).It is only 5-10 mins walk away from gateshead metro station where it's only one stop to the centre of newcastle, and is handy for the baltic gallery and the sage concert hall. The only down side was it was freezing cold in the room and also in the... more

Left it too late to book a New Year package in Scotland which wasn't extortionate in price and Swallow Gateshead was nearest in England available to where we live. Was a bit concerned as it only cost £149 for 3 nights. We needn't have worried. Arrived 30th December. Allocated room on 5th floor ( R501) and were utterly amazed by... more

I have just returned from the Great North Run in Newcastle ans we stayed at the Swallow Hotel in Gateshead. I must admit i was a bit nervous about staying here after reading the reviews about the hotel. The hotel was okay admittingly it could do with a lick of paint. The rooms we had were spotless, perfect for what... more

I was a late arrival having driven down from Abredeen, friendly check in, room spotless, down to the bar, ordered bar meal as wanted to watch the Liverpool match, best fish and chips I have had for ages - trust me I live on the coast!! Breakfast was excellent plenty of freshly cut fruit and the usual full English again... more

The room was a double, the carpet was thread bear and stained with who knows what, the paint was flaking off and bits were lying on the floor, the shower was so dirty it was unusable. It was more memroble as a low grade B&B dive. more

I can only apologise to this guest for the sub standard quality of the accommodation which they have received during their stay. Unfortunately we are aware the hotel has suffered from lack of investment through various ownerships taking place. We are hoping to be able to turn this around now and revitalise areas which are in need of attention.

Yes, it's a somewhat dated and rather distressed 1960's building but it has a certain period charm as a result and in our experience is good value, despite a few rough edges, which it will cost one at least twce their usual rates to hopefully eliminate. We've stayed there on quite a few occasions and found it perfectly adequate if... more

Stayed on Business and on arrival parked on the street which seemed safe enough. The hotel itself looked like it was built in the 1960's or 70's and is a rectangular building with little character. The inside of the hotel is pretty tired and the room I had must have been the smallest I've ever stayed in BUT...... .....it was... more
