I arrived in the charming old town of Appelby in Westmorland on foot from Kirkby Stephens on the last stage of 100 mile walk, but without any hotel reservation. The Tufton Arms, an old fashioned English hotel on the pretty main brough, looked immediately inviting. I am, however, wary of old English hotels as they often disappoint with awful food... more

We held our daughters 21st Birthday at the Tufton last weekend. The food was wonderful and the owner is a bit of a wine buff and gave us excellent advice. We were well looked after. Room 1 was absolutely stunning - 5 star. Excellent location in a typical Cumbrain village. We couldn't ask for more - thank you Nigel, Wendy,... more

Everything in the room was good, but perhaps they need to buy new flat panel tvs and move into the digital era. If you stay at this hotel and are in a room at the front you will hear loud singing from a nearby pub up until after 1am. They will then spill out and unfortunately some will come into... more

We decided to spend 2 days walking near Appleby over the bank holiday and chose to stay at the Tufton Arms. From the outside it looks a little down-at-heal but this masks a little gem. We took the D,B&B option and were pleased to have done so. It worked out out very good value at about 75 pounds each including... more

My wife and I stayed at the Tufton Arms in September last year, when I was walking the Pennine Way, and then we were upgraded to the Honeymoon Suite, to our delight. This time we booked a "3 nights for the price of 2" package, but once again we were upgraded, this time to a suite overlooking the Market Square... more

We have just returned from a weekend stay at The Tufton, we where at first a bit put off due to the reviews below but found them completly untrue! The decor in the bar and recently done up restaurant was fitting and individual. The food and drink was excellant, using fresh and seasonal produce and all the staff where helpfull,... more

A lovely hotel in a very central position in this lovely little market town. Clean, comfortable, friendly. The food was good and the staff helpful. I would happily stay there again. more

We paid £112 for a double room and breakfast. I'd have thought £75 would have been a fairer charge. The bedroom was capacious but had the usual depressing selection of badly-matching, 'bits and pieces' tables and cupboards etc which it appears many British hotels assume is an attraction but I regard as mean and objectionable. Why would one feel comfortable... more

The Tufton Arms is owned and run by the same family who run the Royal Hotel in Comrie. Having stayed at the Royal before we booked a night at the Tufton Arms expecting the same first class experience. We left somewhat disappointed. A traditional building with relatively shabby communal areas hides very spacious, modern and well decorated rooms with excellent... more

We made a very last-minute booking for two nights at the hotel via the hotel website and selected the luxury double room with dinner, bed and breakfast. From the outside the hotel looks like a traditional market town hotel, an impression continued by the furnishings of the reception and hall area, however, once inside the individual rooms, including the lounge... more
