Down on business on a Sunday night after a drive from glasgow and 3 hour survey of a nearby premises. Hotel reception area looked fine, a nice atmosphere and could hear a bit of the students who were having a dinner but all sonded fine and good natured, not a problem. Check in was efficient and found the room easily... more

Swallow Hotels are doing a great value short break - two nights dinner bed and breakfast per person. That's for both nights. Other people have commented about noise. The hotel is right on a busy road so ask for a room at the back of the hotel. Room was large and comfortable Breakfast was good. Dinner was OK - not... more

Just returned from a two day break at Three Tuns and was very pleased with the hotel. Generally in need of updating but staff were brilliant, food good, big clean, comfortable rooms and very convenient for the city centre so no driving or taxis. Some very good deals on two/three day breaks. more

If you do some research you'll be prepared for an old building with old-fashioned furnishings in the somewhat shabby reception area. However, the advantages outweigh these small details. The location is excellent. It takes about 30 seconds to cross the road and go over the bridge and then you're into the old town. Because the hotel is outside of the... more

A group of four of us spent a most enjoyable full-board Christmas break at the Three Tuns. We experienced: # good food and good service in the restaurant # very friendly and helpful staff # a relaxed atmosphere # large, quiet bedrooms (although we realise that during University term-time and/or at weekends rooms at the front might not be so... more

The city was fantastic lots to do looked stunning in the autumn, the night life was great and the retaurants fabulous but the 3 tuns was a dissappointment noisy and dirty. I will go back to Durham but not to... more

I arrived on Friday Oct 24th and booked a single room. It was badly decorated, on the first floor overlooking the main road and the window (not double glazed) did not shut, meaning I heard all the outside noise as if it was in my room. It was the last day of term for the students at Durham University so... more

Lovely place, excellent service. Slightly shabby, but cosy, comfortable rooms. Great food in the restaurant, great prices and lovely staff. One major drawback is noise. Ask for a room at the back (IMPERATIVE if you like sleep!). At the front, the hotel is opposite two pubs and two restaurants. On a Friday night we had drunk teenagers outside the pub,... more

We stayed on a Sunday evening on the most fantastic deal. A 'Sunday night special' cost a total of £60 for bed, breakfast and evening meal for the two of us. It is a classic example of a listed building hotel in an ancient city. The floor boards creak and a few carpets are threadbare but so what. The hotels... more

I cant believe that this place has gone down hill so badly so quickly since we last were here a year ago. We popped in to make a last minute booking a day ago and decided to stay elsewhere even if it meant a 5/10 minute journey into Durham. The lobby/lounge area is full of badly marked chairs and bench... more
