Just returned from a two night stay and this hotel is perfect. Great alternative to impersonal chains, this is a lovely old property, with good sized rooms, comfortable beds and great service. Staff extremely friendly and helpful, excellent breakfasts and the gspot restaurant offers fantastic gourmet dining (with special rates if you eat early). Would definately return. Great for visiting... more

My wife and I stayed one night having taken our son back to University. We wanted somewhere close enough to the centre of Durham to not have to drive in the evening when we went for a meal, as parking in the centre is a nightmare. We found it easily enough and were pleasantly surprised at the amount of room... more

We found this hotel at the last minute when we needed to book for the weekend of the Big Meeting and were very pleased with it, on the whole. It is a bit of a climb up the hill but worth it for the free parking. We arrived early and checked that we could leave the car, then returned later... more

We stayed one night. The double room was very large, clean and comfortable. The ensuite was equally large. We felt welcome. The staff are relaxed and friendly. It is quite a walk (10 to 15 minutes) down a steep hill into Durham, you probably would not want to walk back to the hotel more than twice a day! Good parking... more

We liked the location of this hotel which although up a hill was close to the town and very quiet. The reception we received was helpful and the staff in the dining room were efficient and friendly. The breakfast was the best part of our stay. Our initial reaction to the room was positive but the furniture was basic and... more

We had a wonderful time at Farnley Tower. The service was excellent and we really loved the traditional style and character. Breakfast was cooked to order and was brilliant. The meal at the restaurant (Gourmet Spot) was out of this world. I understand they've got a new chef and he's aiming for a Michelin. I thought his food was better... more

Stayed here for a weekend in Durham. Very good location for city centre, and has parking. Room (1) was basic but fine, if a little noisey, near a boiler. Service very good as was breakfast. If you're in Durham on a Sunday go to a service at the cathedral - great atmosphere. more

Staff - friendly. Location - great. Breakfast - fine. The house has been beautifully restored and has definite "wow" factor when you walk in. The room itself was less inviting, rather like staying with an austere great aunt - clean, but somewhat dated and functional. We could have overlooked that, but the bed! Very uncomfortable and extremely noisy, such that... more

when i first booked this hotel back in february of this year the reviews seemed to be ok. unfortunately as the months went on the reviews on your site seemed to get worse and worse. i was getting to the stage that i was dreading our stay at this hotel. when we turned up- we were pleasantly surprised. the room... more

Location is what this B&B has going for it, walking distance to the town and cathedral of Durham and easily accessible from the motorway. It also has an excellent but pricey restaurant downstairs open only for dinner. And off-street parking. Those are the high points! We booked a larger room and did get more space but that was about it.... more
