Basically a post-war student halls of residence opened up to the public outside term time. There may be some more characterful rooms in older parts of the college - I don't know if these are bookable or not - but the one I was in was a basic institutional room with bed, wardrobe, a threadbare chair and not much else. Bathroom looked more like an office cubicle with a shower, toilet and (tiny) wash stand installed in it.

Fire alarm system seems over sensitive - one member of our party set it off, apparently while boiling a kettle (supplied by the management!), and everyone had to vacate the block. Heaven help the students who live here year-round if this happens all the time.

Wish I had stayed at the Castle instead after reading some of the reviews on here.

Just spent a night with husband and two grandsons in Hatfield College, part of Durham University. The College is in the heart of ancient Durham, very close to the Castle and Cathedral - and has its own parking! The College is usually used for conferences in the summer vacation, but does a good trade in bed and breakfast in the ancient students' rooms. We had two inter-connecting twin rooms with bathroom, and a lovely breakfast - fully-cooked or Continetal, huge pot of coffee, fresh fruit, hot toast, nothing was too much trouble. We paid £25 a person, but you need to book well-ahead with the University accommodation office. There's plenty of places very nearby for dinner, and the Cathedral is literally a stone's throw away. Fortunately, they turn off the bells at night! Altogether, a very pleasant experience in a very over-crowded historic city.
