My wife and I wanted to go to Italy and it was to be my wife's first time and my first time since I last went as a kid. Knowing little about the country, we purchased one of the Rough Guide books to assist. We chose San Remo because of its proximity to the coast line and the mainly positive things the book had to say about it.
San Remo attracts mostly German, Italian, French and some Russian tourists. There were English travellers, but were few and far between. I attributed this to the fact the nearest airport was miles away and hence attracted mostly mainland Europeans. What we did was fly to Nice and take a taxi to the hotel. A taxi set us back around £100 one way, but was convenient and allowed us to enjoy views of the French Riviera along the way. The hotel can arrange a private car to take you to the hotel, but there are plenty of taxis hanging outside Nice airport (costing around the same).
