First impression is great: outstanding location, impressive facade, picturesque square in front. On the sea side of the hotel the view is delightful: the waves, the trotters from the nearby racetrack training and the beach combers. The hotel's best restaurant serves good food albeit at higher than justified prices. The room/suites are big in a clunky and awkward way. However,... more

The Grand hotel is where the French author Marcel Proust stayed every summer until 1914. However, the hotel has been renovated several times since then. The room was spaceous and nicely decorated with a "French balcony" overlooking the sea. We travel a lot, mostly staying in five star hotels. This was definitely one of the best rooms we have had.... more

Fronting the ocean and in the centre of town, the position of this hotel is ideal. The hotel itself is in an extremely tired state, even by French accommodation standards. While I can't say that it was wholly uncomfortable (the reason I give it 2 stars and not 1), it most certainly does not offer value for the money they... more

Yes it is a nice and quiet place ; but no it not a palace. It is a 4 stars by is historical position, that's all. The peolpe are nice ; but the bed are bad ans need new cover and sheets. It needs a litle work (on the painting...) ; the food were just not good. The breakfast has... more

There are many great grand hotels in France but this place is not one. My children summed this place up in the Haiku poem which follows: "Mr Marcelle Proust Had crappy taste in hotels Madelines are hard" It was expensive, old, and not at all up to the usual standard you would expect in France. We have stayed at many... more

Lovely old hotel with Proustian connections - right on sea front at Cabourg. We had a sea-view room just down the corridor from M Proust's. Lovely views across a wide horizon. Rest of hotel retains its Edwardian charm. Staff were discreet and helpful. Prices are a bit savage - we stayed 2 nights as a treat. Breakfast excellent - plus... more

If you have a young family that you want to let loose on the beach, while being able to retreat to reasonable comfort nearby, then this hotel is absolutely spot on. If you want a sophisticated holiday with regular meals in Michelin-starred restaurants, then you shouldn't consider Cabourg at all. Cabourg is an unsophisticated seaside town and does not pretend... more

Upon arrival, the hotel from the exterior looks the part. When you enter the reception, three things greet you instantly. The first is the extremely attentive bus-boy, the second is the tiredness of the decor and general appearance and the last is the appalling customer service of the reception staff. The room, like most of the hotel, was soul-less (we... more

Spent one week-end at the Grand. Buildong does look grand, so does the lobby, and that's just about it. It has been taken over by Mercure, a core market brand of Accor, and despite being the brand flagship, they just don't know a thing about luxury places, apart from the price. Paid 270 Euros for a sea facing room on... more
