Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great campsite, just back from a weekend with 2 families, facilities are great - toilet block was spotless, 2 min walk from a gorgeous beach, views of the mountains, water and electric available on the tent pitch. We were lucky with the weather thankfully so the ground wasn't too wet, big playground on site and another playground down at the beach for the kids. Pitches are a great size too.

Worst camping trip ever. I would not recommend this campsite. The area was completely flooded my kids and I spent all night trying to keep water out of our tent. I could not get in contact with anyone on the site and NO security on site. Although i was told there was an emergency number printed on a door somewhere in the rain at 3am i could not find any emergency number and certainly was not given one when we arrived. The gates are locked at 11:30pm so no way to leave the park. We were wet, cold and scared. If we had had a serious emergency im not sure what we would have done. It was just myself and my 3 young daughters so it really was awful. Everything we had was soaked, although the park staff gave us dry towles for showers in the morning this in no way made up for allowing tents to be pitched in an area that floods so badly. They calmed this area never flooded before but honestly i find it extremely hard to believe. They 'kindly' refunded one of 2 nights pitch fees but that certainly doesnt make up for the sleepless nights my daughters have suffered since waking up crying thinking theres water all around them again. Im still furious

Response from Chestnutt Holiday Parks, General Manager at Chestnutt Holiday Park
Responded 12 Sept 2023
We are as disappointed as you and your daughters that your stay with us was not enjoyable. Unfortunately on your second night the storm forecasted, which your tent could not withstand, came in ferociously and was accompanied by torrential rain that no ground could deal with. Regarding security barriers which we have had for many years, there is an emergency number displayed clearly at the barrier. On request it is always opened for emergencies and at no time is anyone unable to exit. We hope your next camping trip has more favourable weather.

I paid a visit to this "holiday park" in early August 2023. It is a very big site, with mobile homes on one side of the road and tents/caravans etc on the other. The main area is well equipped with a shop, cafe and take away. The staff in reception were very nice and helpful. Across the road is where the tents and majority of RV's and caravans are parked, there is a small toilet and shower block but no campers kitchen. There is a large field to accommodate tents but not sufficient facilities (campers kitchen/fridge/tv room, covered area), compared to a lot of other sites. We arrived on a Friday and had planned to leave on the Monday but left a day early due to the fact that everything shuts on the site and locally on Sundays. I understand there are local laws regarding Sundays but found it strange that the onsite shop, cafe and take away also closed. Another issue is the fact that the nearest restaurant/pub/petrol station is 4-5 miles away. Besides the holiday park, there is nothing for miles, which was unfortunate, but not the fault of Chestnutt.

This is a brilliant campsite, with great clean facilities and playing areas. Very close to a beautiful beach which is great for swimming or all types of watersports. There is a great atmosphere on site, which is very well served by a well stocked shop and an excellent cafe/takeaway. We cant wait to return and would recommend this site to anyone.

Super site for touring a caravan. By a super beach for walks and swimming in warmer months. The whole place is clean and very well maintained. Toilets/shower block very clean with plenty of hot water with great pressure in the showers for a £1 token.

A lovely caravan park, with clean toilets and shower facilities. A good play park, football pitch and activities for children. Lovely sea and mountain views , with a great restaurant and carry out The Galley just across the road and a great ice cream shop The Parlour just next to the park. A path to walk along the sea front from caravan park. Would definitely stay again and we also had great weather this week.

Very well kept caravan site suitable for tourers. The chip van beside 'the cabin' is well worth a visit. Best chips I've ever had from a chippy! very friendly owner who can't do enough for you. If you're staying here get a takeaway.

When I booked for this company I was under the belief that I was booking for the Annalong site. It had a host of amenities that would have suited our family. Unfortunately we were booked for the Chestnutt site outside Kilkeel on the shores of Carlingford Lough. There were nowhere the same amount of facilities available to us. Yes the scenery and location are breathtaking but on a wet, miserable day there was nothing to do to entertain 2 very bored kids. On arrival we were asked for a £20 deposit for the toilet key. I have never been anywhere that was more than £5 and those locations were far better than this. The main campsite was on the other side of a very busy road and this is where the main playground was. There was one at the beach but you also had to cross the same road. We will not be rebooking for this site.

Response from AChestnutt, Manager at Chestnutt Holiday Park
Responded 30 Aug 2018
Thank you for taking the time to review our Park. We are glad you found the beauty of our location at Cranfield breathtaking despite the unsettled weather while you camped with us. For the purposes of clarity it is worth explaining that we operate a number of Holiday Parks. For short term visitors, Sandilands and Chestnutt Holiday Park facilitate tourers, motorhomes and campers while Annalong is only able to accommodate tourers and motorhomes. With regard to the keys we find it necessary to ask for a deposit which is returned on departure. Surprisingly this just covers the cost of a replacement but is rarely necessary. Most people are very careful and in the event of loss we are often able to return the keys to their owners. With a wonderful region to explore, our summer scheme, play parks, open spaces to cycle and meet other children it is disappointing that your children were bored. Hopefully if you take a chance to visit us again you may enjoy a different experience.
