We stayed at Shines Guesthouse for 2 nights, contact-less check in on arrival, the rooms were clean and it is in a nice location, there is a nice seating area with a homely look about it, The only thing is that i think, we should have been informed that the restaurant was closed Monday and Tuesday, other then that is was good

I’m not one to review somewhere normally but had to warn people to avoid this place at all cost! Stayed here for one night only thankfully. Don’t know where to start, from the filthy door to my room that greeted me on arrival to the chewing gum stuck on the lampshade it was a nightmare from start to finish. Bathroom smelled awful, soap dish caked with soap scum, shower base had what looked like cigarette burns ( I’ve seen other people’s pictures that they posted and this still hasn’t been addressed) and fire escape blocked by an armchair and stairs clogged with bed base and other debris. I paid €86 for this room, I feel even half this price would be too expensive. Would rather sleep in my car that stay here again...

What a great find away from City Center.Combination of lodging, restaurant, and bar was a delight.Staff could teach customer service. Food was delicious, bar was always lively and friendly, and room was spacious and clean. Would go back to Ireland again just to hang out here! Lovely, lovely people.

A 3 night stay in Shines was just perfect all-round. The staff are brilliant, the chef is excellent as is the food he prepares. The room was spacious. The pricing for food, drinks and rooms is very reasonable. It was an excellent base to meet friends and to take a short taxi ride into Athlone. Hats off to Stephen and the team. Well done!

We stayed in the guesthouse for one night. The staff were extremely friendly, courteous and helpful. The room rate was brilliant. The room was small but had everything like telly, tea making facilities and an en suite. The bed was bery comfortable. The rooms were quiet. We had a meal in the restaurant which was great value for money and very delicious. I would well recommend this guesthouse if you are staying in Athlone The room, environs and the bar/restaurant were extremely clean

I stayed here in a large group for a Friends hen party, when we got to our rooms we noticed there was no running water in any of the rooms! We went down to ask why this was and were told that there was a burst pipe in the area and that it would be back in an hour! This hour past and there was no water we asked again and at this point we were told that we would be thrown out for being rude! As we had arrangements made for the hen party we got ready and left the premises in disgust of not being able to shower before hitting the town! On our way into town we got talking to our taxi man, he explained he only lived two minutes away from the hotel and he had prefect running water! We hoped when we returned from our night out the water would be back! This didn’t happen! When we returned to our room there was no running water and the room was totally freezing with no heat on! The water never returned all night or in the morning, we used bottled water to brush our teeth and wash our faces in the morning! When we handed in our keys on checkout we didn’t get as much as a Sorry from the staff! They literally just took the keys from us and walked off! I would never recommend staying here and will never step foot inside here again!!! …

I asked the young girl who checked us in why people visited Athlone. She thought for some moments then replied, 'because it's roughly halfway from everywhere'. On the evidence of our stay - which was for a single, en route stop, halfway from Coleraine to New Ross, I couldn't disagree. Shine's has the air of an establishment going downhill not up. That's not to say there's anything wrong here, it just needs brightening up and I get the sense the owners can't justify the expense of doing that. The bedrooms appear to have been a development of the steakhouse on the ground floor. Everything is clean but needs freshening up - and if your room is (as ours was) above the kitchens you'll want to operate the Velux windows in the ceiling and not the main window. The staff in the restaurant were efficient and very warm and friendly. The food was well cooked and generous.…
