If you decide to stay in Palenque, rather than closer to the ruins, and you want something better than the dreary backpacker hotels downtown, a good place to look is in the rainforest area (what's left of it!) north of town. This is where most of the better (and more expensive) hotels are to be found. But there is one hotel which offers a really good deal for the quality you get, the Posada Canada. The hotel itself looks like an American-type motel, with rooms on two floors along a long building facing a rather scruffy yard with a few tropical plants. The rooms themselves are OK, but pretty basic, with ceiling fans, local TV and shower bathrooms. The owner is very friendly and offers lots of advice. It's quite a schlep to downtown but it's quite close to the main bus station. There used to be a bar and restaurant on the premises but these have closed down. At 200 pesos for a single, this is a very fair deal for Palenque. more
