So we booked months in advance for new years 2008/09. All together there were 13 of us, using 2 rooms and a suite. Extortionate prices but then we were expecting that! You cant beat the location. Absolutely amazing. On Russell street (good shopping area) opposite ciruclar quay (for the boat tours ect) and a wicked view of the opera house!!!... more

I just love The Russell Hotel in Sydney. Everything about it is perfect. The rooms are lovely, each room has a different design. The beds are very comfortable, each room comes with a big cupboard, an ironing board and a tea-making corner. The rooms to the side and the back are very quiet - I've never had a room out... more

We really enjoyed our stay at the Russell. It's a quaint old boutique hotel in The Rocks district near Circular Quay in 0ld Sydney. It was right in the middle of everything we were doing: old Sydney, catching public transport at Circular Quay, dining at the Sydney harbor, looking out over the Opra House. It is kind of creaky and... more

We stayed at the Russell and loved it. Early morning walks around the Opera House and Botanical gardens were magical. Lots of good places to eat within walking distance. Hop on the ferry to Manly or Bondi for the day. This place is more like a B&B than a regular hotel. The stairs up are narrow and steep. If you... more

stayed at The Russell on a recent trip to Sydney. It is a great little heritage hotel right in the heart of the city. It is heritage listed so if you are after elevators and a swimming pool this is not the place for you (you have to climb and old winding staircase to enter the hotel), but if you... more

stayed here recently in one of the more basic rooms with a shared bathroom and it was perfect. The rooms are small and you share a bathroom but for $150 for two people and breakfast right smack bang in sydney; near all the pubs, 2 secs to the bridge / opera house. For only a little more than a hostel... more

First impressions were "oh no, what have we done!" The front door was old and dirty and unwelcoming, the experience didn't get any better!! The stairs were old and dirty and no help was offered as we did numerous trips up and down with baby, cot, and luggage. The room was no better, my heart sank when I saw it.... more

I wanted a nice character hotel to have a lovely w/e away. What we got was a dirty pokey room, lumpy mattress and pillows, dirty carpet, thick dust, very small room, no place to put anything. The tea and coffee making facilities were a joke, in a wardrobe and the kettle lead got very hot when used - dangerous! NO... more

The location of this hotel is terrific, but the facility is extremely tired. Do not believe the claims regarding the “charm” of its 1887 origins. Many of the furnishings may date to 1887, but this place can hardly be described as charming. more

The Russell hotel was fantastic! We had a wonderful experience there in November. If you're into small, boutique-like places to stay this is for you! It's in a perfect location to see Sydney; close to the ferries, Opera House, and bridge. It does have stairs only leading up to the reception and the rooms are fairly small, so don't expect... more
