My friends and I were expecting poor things after reading reviews on the web, so with low expectations we arrived in Sydney and gave the hostel a call. Within 10mins a free bus service was provided and we were given a warm welcome on arrival (good start). The hostel is in a busy part of town with the odd dodgy... more

Stayed at Funk House for 7 nights in June/July 2008. As an 18 year old solo traveller, I have stayed in many hostels across Europe, Oz and NZ. This was the worst hostel I have been to. Staff were rude and unhelpful. Other guests were long-term residents, who spent all day on the roof smokin weed. The noise through the... more

The location of this place is pretty central and easy access to most places. The area is loud, fast and can be fun (depending on your idea of fun!) There are a lot of sex shops and strip clubs etc, but lots of bars and restaurants for people not interested in this. It is a cheap area and everything is... more

Very good hostel if you stay in Sydney for a long term. Friendly staff. Help at any time. After 3 rooms in this hostels, I've seen great one and also bad, but all the time, it depend of the person inside....! Quite cheap for 3 or 4 beds room. Very good (and famous) BBQ on the roof. more

I stayed here for two weeks in December 2002, almost five years ago, but unlike some reviews here I had a fantastic time. I stayed in a four person mixed dorm and everyone was very respectful towards each other (with regards to noise and such). They have a rooftop terrace which was great, every night it was filled with very... more

This place is terrible - I really would not recommend it. My friend and I checked in, saw our rooms, and swiftly checked out. I wanted a room in a female dorm - the room was pretty disgusting, the linen was grim, there was no real space for me to even put my luggage down - and I certainly wouldn't... more

First time in a hostel and it put us off for quite awhile. On arrival we were given the key to an occupied room, the couple in the bed were just as unhappy as me!! The next room was unmade- thankfully, we could see the state of the mattress (stains of every colour). The smoke alarm was set-off by someone... more

Place is colouful - both literally and metaphorically. Kings Cross is loud and brash, but not as threatening as some report. Hostel was good - rooms cleaned every day, good kitchen, and free breakfast which is never a bad plan!! Lack of air con in February did make the nights a bit sticky - but our twin room had a... more

We arrived in Sydney with no where to stay. We spent a couple of hours on the internet at the airport trying to find somewhere. The funk house was about all we could afford and had a room available. We'd read the other review about it, but didn't really have much of a choice. We were travelling with a Longboard,... more

We arrived after hours. The door was locked (fair enough) There was a girl behind reception who could see us knocking on the door but made no effort to come and let us in. We have booked a doulble room for a treat - some treat normally doubles are nice. The bed had not been changed and there were stains... more
