I was booked into the Astoria hotel for the period of 18 December 2006 to 1 January 2007 and had to pay in advance. On arrival the hotel was a tip because the manager told me that it was to be demolished shortly. They should have told customers this before accepting bookings. I checked out the next day, receiving only a partial refund, and found alternate lodging but had to pay a premium due to the time of year and short notice. Look elsewhere if they are still taking bookings

The Astoria is nothing special and by no means luxurious, but it's clean, very affordable, a short tram ride from the CBD and directly opposite the express shuttle to the airport. Service was good, the bed was comfortable, and the room had all the essentials, though the bathroom was tiny and cramped. There's no room service, but an adequate buffet breakfast is free, and there was a take-away pizza menu beside the bed. A good compromise between a backpacker hostel and a more expensive and less friendly hotel.
