Everyone else reviewing this has covered the hotel decor (shabby or chic depending on your view I guess) pretty well. Inexpensive ish... our room was pretty awful but not the main concern. We were there when the English cricket team were playing NZ. The bar attached to the hotel served well into the wee hours, and had their music system... more

Great location, clean and warm . However concerned about health & safety in the room - firstly we experienced spongy uncomfortable beds, with no support in the mattress, sleepless night. Secondly my friend slipped over in the bath, having a shower - there were no handrails of support while the shower mat did not stick in the bath. My friend... more

The hotel is in a great location, right on the seafromt. Yes, the rooms are dated but they are clean & comfortable. As mentioned by other reviewers the downside is a lack of ventilation & light. There is no air conditioning and the only window we had was a small door leading to the hotels roof terrace which meant the... more

Stayed here one night on our way south, Napier's a neat town to walk around in. The price was right, and the location is very good! The Breakers restaurant is also handy, being right downstairs. The Masonic Hotel is kind of cool in that it's got some history to it. It's not super posh, but it's clean and a worthy... more

An absolutely neutral (boring, soso, whatever) experience. I don't think "old and outdated" is quite the equivalent of "art deco" but what do I know. Anyhow, the place had a very impersonal feel to it - you could've switched the front desk ladies with convenience store clerks and not noticed. No perks, nothing extraordinary, decent price. The location was really... more

Perfect location. Huge rooms. Art deco feel throughout - as you would expect in Napier. A little dated, but very well looked after. Definitely not "tired", as mentioned in some other reviews. We stayed for 1 night and had a room opening out to the front balcony overlooking the beach. The tourist information office is across the street, as is... more

I wish I could give this place a more positive review, but I can't. The exterior is great Art Deco, but the rooms are nothing like the exterior. I had room 111, which had greenish-blue carpet, an orange bedspread and beige wallpaper. Nothing seems to go together. The bathroom has cheap linoleum flooring; perhaps covering the original ceramic tile. There... more

My friends and I only had one night to stay in Napier and we wanted to walk the Art Deco neighborhood. So, we stayed at the Mason because it was very convenient. The hotel is old and dated, but comfortable and clean. My only real complaint was the tiny bathroom that was difficult to maneuver. The bed was comfortable; the... more

My husband and I stayed here in June 07 for 3 nights and thought it was very good. What others perhaps may see as tired we thought were fantastic original Art Deco features, plus it had the best (and one of the VERY few that we found ) radiators in accomodation in NZ. We were told by Vince (see in... more
