Spent 3 nights at the McHardy house in March 2007 as part of a 3 week trip around New Zealand. The house is beautiful and David and Jan were the perfect hosts. Sadly we did not get to sample dinner but if the breakfasts were anything to go by then we certainly missed out. It is a great place to... more

This is an excellent B&B in a lovely old, large home, with top-notch proprieters. We had the very appealing Alexandria "suite", which is a tastefully decorated room with a sitting area and a non-private verandah. No view. Hosts David and Jan are completely firiendly and helpful; they made our visit a real pleasure. The place was hard to find the... more

My wife and I drove into Napier after a week's trout fishing near Taupo. We stayed only one night, but would recommend McHardy House and hosts Jan and David Rayner without hesitation. It is a beautiful and comfortable boutique hostel, and the Rayners are true professionals. Plus, and this is the real payoff, if you let your hair down and... more

We booked McHardy House as the place to stay to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of our party and we could not have found anything better. From the moment we arrived until we left, it was a truly excellent experience. Jan and David have a beautiful home with superb rooms and superb food. Our only disappointment - our schedule... more

Jan and David have every detail under control and the house itself is fantastic (ask for a reservation at the restaurant 'Pacifica' too). What a shame we only had 1 night spare. more

Where to start...? The hosts, the views, the comforts, the cooking, or the history? Having travelled through NZ for three weeks over Christmas 06 and the New Year, we found ourselves mid point of the trip at McHardy House, picked up from a Trip Advisor search. Dave and Jan the hosts are both idiosyncratic and fantastic. We arrived as strangers... more

A beautifully restored Victorian small luxury hotel run by a lovely English couple, with views of Hawkes Bay. The beds are to die for, rooms & baths are immaculate, & the included gourmet breakfast is fantastic. A highlight of our trip! more

My husband took me to Napier, to stay at McHughs for our anniversary and we had a quite wonderful time. The proprietors of McHardy's, Jan and David, are extremely friendly and professional and know just how to help make your trip memorable. Nothing was too much for them, from ordering taxi's to sorting out the tours we wanted to go... more

We stayed one night at McHardy house on a recent drive around the North Is and fully recommend it (and we're pretty picky - we also stayed at Huka Lodge this trip). Your hosts at McHardy house are true professionals and have been employed by famous folk around the world (including Rod Stewart). The rooms are stylish and comfy, the... more

If you're venturing this way, stay with hosts Jan and David, two of the most attentive, gracious and interesting B&B operators we've ever met. The room was beautifully furnished; bathroom, modern; the common areas, lovely; the breakfast, out-of-this-world. Peaches and tomatoes picked right from David's garden, homemade muffins, eggs and bacon, pancakes, espresso drinks. Be sure to call for directions... more
