The good bits first. It was really quiet tucked up the back way off the road. Excellent location to shows, restaurants,shopping, and buses. Easy to find from the motorway by car. Off street parking. We stayed in the main building near the road for 3 nights. The place is dingy, filthy, noisy and overall very unpleasant. We booked the place on the net, and were totally misled by it's rating. It was by some distance the worst place we stayed on a 9 week trip to NZ and OZ. more

We had a two bed apartment which was up the steep drive behind the 'motel' and no-one to help with cases. I think that is when the penny dropped that this was a place for young un-fussy backpackers. There are three types of rooms at Halswell, the Budget Hotel, the Motel and the Lodge. They make no qualms about the Budget Hotel being exactly that, Budget, so if you go there expecting something better, you're naturally going to be disappointed.
