First the positive. Fairly convenient location, especially to Te Papa and restaurants. Staff was friendly, for the most part. Price was good. Now the other. 1) The room was minuscule, and did not even have enough space to sit at a table to eat or use the computer. There was no closet and no dresser. 2) They charged me for... more

Hi i was just checking out one of my favourite Wellington accommodation sites (i couldn't get what i wanted because they were booked out - that's the trouble with being good and reasonable!) and was most surprised at some -ve comments. I manage a Fellowship Programme in the health sector and often have to accommodate fellows whose English is barely... more

I stayed here a year ago while passing through Wellington and thought it was great little find and have just been back again. The basic hotel rooms in the front block have all been done up since last time which has made a big difference so they feel newer and cleaner plus my room was only $90 which is what... more

The good bits first. It was really quiet tucked up the back way off the road. Excellent location to shows, restaurants, shopping, and buses. Easy to find from the motorway by car. Off street parking. Friendly neighbourhood cat. The lodge room we had was very small, only the bed to sit on. Mouldy bathroom with peeling paint. No bath mat first... more

Stayed here in a studio motel unit at the back of the complex. We found it okay really - first look I thought it was a bit ordinary for the price - but it had everything we needed plus a nice spa bath and reasonable size bathroom. It sort of grew on us! The room was quite spacious too -... more

We stayed in the main building near the road for 3 nights. The place is dingy, filthy, noisy and overall very unpleasant. We booked the place on the net, and were totally misled by it's rating. It was by some distance the worst place we stayed on a 9 week trip to NZ and OZ. more

The motel is up a steep ramp and has limited parking. This leads to the worst sort of 'Social Darwinism' amongst guests! The budget rooms are like dog houses. We stayed in the much bigger motel rooms. We stayed in two because of booking problems. The 2 bedroom we had was grim and cramped. The 1 bedroom studio was much... more

We had a two bed apartment which was up the steep drive behind the 'motel' and no-one to help with cases. I think that is when the penny dropped that this was a place for young un-fussy backpackers. Duvets had no covers on them, and blood stains and dirt on the duvets. The bathoom, well to put it kindly, I think... more

There are three types of rooms at Halswell, the Budget Hotel, the Motel and the Lodge. They make no qualms about the Budget Hotel being exactly that, Budget, so if you go there expecting something better, you're naturally going to be disappointed. However, if you just want a place to sleep in a great location, this is a pretty good... more
