The restaurant could not give us bread with dinner! This is an old property and we were in the back seccion. I don't know if the rooms in front were better. It was clean. more

Traveling around the south Island and booked this hotel the same day at the information center. Manager on duty, Mike, was very helpful. Accomodated our family of five in two adjoining rooms. Rooms were clean and well set up. Only complaint was that when we checked in with another family that we were traveling with, the front desk attendant couldn't... more

This was one of the best hotels we have stayed in and we travel a lot. The bed was sooo... comfortable and the room was nicely furnished. It was very clean and the buffet breakfast was great. Nothing bad to say about this hotel, as good as the Sofitel chain. We would definately stay again. travelpro more

This is one of those old hotels that have been tarted-up. Sometimes they get it right, in this case not. The hotel incorporates a sleezy casino which is little more than a poker machine hall full of the usual desparate types. We found the staff at best stand-offish, some we just plain rude. It's in the centre of town, which... more

A friend and I stayed here for 1 night as we were travelling round the South Island in a campervan and it was my birthday so decided to splash out a bit. Lovely hotel, clean fresh and modern. The staff were friendly and helpful upon arrival with a porter ready to take our bags. We went for a Superior Room... more

I enjoyed this hotel - great location and very nice refurbished room. Smallish bathroom. Perhaps the most comfortable hotel bed I have slept in. Minor quible - the hotel restaurant (Carlton I think) has an a la carte breakfast menu but it is not offered, you have to request it. Otherwise they flog the typical over-proced buffets to you (off... more

The Southern Cross is the grand old lady of Dunedin. For years, she really was showing her age. Now the management have begun modernising the rooms, this is back on my list of hotels to stay at. I can't speak about the food as I always dine out when in Dunedin (even for breakfast) in one of the excellent cafes... more

The refurbished part of this hotel is lovely. The rooms have little view but it is inner city so this is usually the case. Rooms are not overly large but modern with lcd tvs etc. The bistro downstairs was great for light meals, I could sit by the fire and have a wine and didn't feel it was a problem... more
