I overheard another guest describe the Historic Stone House as a "sanctuary" and I agree completely. Yes, it's beautiful on the outside with the old stone work beautifully blended with a new addition. The inside is nicely and neutrally decorated but what I appreciated more than the decor was the ambiance--it felt good here, it felt cozy. There were lit... more

From the moment we arrived Jon and Alex went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Jon primarily looked after us and it felt like nothing was too much trouble. They were incredibly knowledgable about the local area, ready with suggestions for rainy days and booked everything for us. We left early one day to visit Milford Sound... more

We stayed here for four nights in early April and had a wonderful stay. Jan and Mike were fantastic hosts, extremely welcoming and helpful, with loads of advice and assistance in booking activities while making us feel completely relaxed and at home. The house is a great base for exploring Queenstown and its activities-very central, yet quiet (4/5 is for a... more

It's a gem. Queenstown is full of new, souless apartments and hotels but the Historic Stone House has character and we immediately felt at home. Spotlessly clean and we couldn't have been made more welcome or been better looked after. Our room was lovely and our Victorian bathroom had both a bath and shower Breakfast was a feast, fresh fruit,... more

We arrived jet-lagged and weighed down with lots of stuff and were met by Jan, a friend of the owners who was looking after the place. It's a bit odd, as you walk in and through the front door which seems to be permanently unlocked, and then pick up the phone in the hall to announce your arrival! We were... more

We arrived at the Historic Stone House on day three of our trip through the south island after driving from Christchurch via the scenic route by lake Putaki and Tekapo. The property is beautifully maintained with lovely gardens out front and a warm, tastefully decorated earthy but modern interior. The shared spaces including the kitchen and sitting rooms were comfortable... more

We definitely enjoyed our stay at the Historic Stone House. Alex was a fantastic host who cheerfully answered all our quesitons and helped us sort out the logistics of leaving for the Routeburn Track the next day. The rooms are super comfortable, very tastefully decorated and clean with thick down duvets. There's a spacious kitchen for guests and 2 very... more
