This was an unexpected surprise. We went to Stewart Island to see the wilderness areas, and also stayed in a most wonderful place. The warmest of welcomes was offered by Jo, who made our stay such a pleasure. We were very happy we had booked to stay here five nights. more

Like recent reviewers, we thought this place was amazing. Some of the highlights were: - one of the warmest welcomes I have ever had. I was immediately made to feel a very special guest. - a wonderful view that delighted at any time of the day. - instant access to the best local knowledge about walks, wildlife, history, excursions etc... more

Five stars on all assessment levels! Jo and Wayne, who have run the Lodge since August 2008, are superb hosts. The rooms are very comfortable and well-equipped and have simply amazing views over Halfmoon Bay. Although just a short walk down to Oban village, Jo and Wayne are there to greet you at the Wharfside by car to eliminate bag... more

Under new management so ignore the negative comments made before august 2008: Jo and Wayne have made the Lodge a holiday paradise on this beautiful island. Comfortable room with outstanding views. Excellent breakfast. Drinks and canapes with fellow guests at 5 pm a surprising bonus to the holiday. With 22 years + experience on the island, Jo and Wayne were... more

Stewart Island Lodge is under new management since August. Real Journeys, who run the ferry, owns it and the hosts are employed by Real Journeys. We were met at the ferry and driven up to the Lodge. Panoramic views of Half moon bay. We were given time to check out our room and then met with Jo to discuss our... more

We stayed at the Stewart Island Lodge with 4 adults and 2 children. It was a beautiful spot and the hosts, Jo and Wayne went out of their way to make sure we had a good time. The visit more than exceeded our expectations. The rooms were clean and comfortable with a beautiful view from the deck off the rooms.... more

What a wonderful place Stewart Island is, made even more so by the superb accommodation at Stewart Island Lodge under its new owners....just magic! We were offered cooked or continental breakfast at a time to suit us, transport when and where needed, pre-dinner drinks and nibbles (see photo for a two-person serving), Internet access, and advice on restaurants. In our... more

This place could be great if the owners weren't so awful. The setting is nice and convenient to see Stewart Island, although it is grossly overpriced. The owners & family are rude, condescending, and act as though the guests are imposing on them. They clearly do not have the personality types to run a luxury lodge and should think seriously about... more

The Stewart Island Lodge is now under new management (commencing August 2008). Recently refurbished, this upmarket lodge has six bedrooms, all with ensuites, private balconies and stunning ocean views. Its large grounds are home to many native birds, including kaka (native parrots). The revised tariff now includes an evening aperitif and appetisers, plus a cooked breakfast. Thank you for the...

We had a wonderful weekend on Stewart Island with 4 other couples. Our group of ten booked out the 5 rooms at the Stewart Island Lodge for 3 nights. It was all done over the internet, the pictures were wonderful. We looked forward to spending the weekend together in an environment that was quiet, scenic, and one where we could... more
