We had a lot of trouble finding accommodation at Te Anau, due to the busy holiday period but managed to get an apartment at the Explorer. We were staying 1 night on our way to Milford Sounds and was disappointed on arrival, the decor was dark and the bathroom needed updating. Although the decor needs updating the room was very... more

This is a great little motor lodge. The accomodation was great with well appointed kitchen and seperate bedroom and 2 single beds. The balcony offered beautiful mountain views. With all the wood, it felt like a cottage getaway. It is situated within Walking distance to all things in Te Anau. more

Great apartment! Everything is clean, the room was large, with a kitchen, veranda and tv. When we arrived, we had only been staying at hotels for the last 5 weeks, and it was sooo nice to make our own food - there are at least two grocery stores in the centre of Te Anau - which is only a 2... more

Four of us (young at heart 60 plus year old travellers) stayed here for 2 nights in mid February 2007, during a 3 week touring holiday in NZ. The Location is excellent, within walking distance of shops and restaurants. We had one of the newer bungalow like apartments and it was really spacious, clean, well equipped and peaceful. We were... more

We spent Friday 16th February '07 at the Explorer. We had unit 10 on the first floor and it was fantastic! The two things I value most in accommodation are cleanliness and space. The Explorer scored top-marks on both fronts. This was a *large* unit. In the bedroom was a queen bed, a single-bed, plus another single-bed tucked away around... more

My wife, brother-in-law and I spent 3 nights in Te Anau, mainly as a base for visiting Milford Sound. We had a bungalow, with a lounge/dining room/kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms. The rooms were huge - twice the normal size! The place was a bit odd, but was simply decorated and furnished, with all the necessary amenities. The Motel is... more

We booked in a hurry after reading reviews here. We should have read "stuck in the 60's" a bit more closely. This was so bad it was almost good. From the smelly pillows (years of sweat), to the amazing array of 1980s second hand furniture - this was not a place to be taken lightly. We paid $125 for the... more

This place is absolutely fine for a base for the drive to Milford Sound. Yes the decor is a bit dated, wood panelling and plastic shower walls, but the furnishings are all new and in good condition. The space was generous and clean and the staff helpful. The location next to a pleasant park through which you can take the... more

We picked this hotel based on it's rating on tripadvisor and we weren't disappointed. Our two bedroom apartment was huge and nicely furnished (no wood panelling or 60s interior design features in sight). The bathroom in particular was spotlessly clean and contained a spa bath much to the delight of my mother-in-law who was travelling with us. Nice location close... more
