We booked one night at Sunkist to break up our long journey from Gisborne to Paihia because it was conveniently located on our route, more or less. We booked using Hotelbookers a we had for other backpacker accommodation so we were quite taken aback to be greeted with a lecture and a surcharge when we checked in. The lady at the front desk complained openly that she has to pay commission to Hostelbookers for our reservation and that since we were paying by card she would also have to pay commission to MasterCard. Then the balance we were quoted was increased because she alleges our quoted rate was BBH and YHA Members' rate only. There was no word of any of this on Hostelbookers and no such similar complaint at previous accommodation. Not a very welcoming start!
